From Saginaw Ice to the Hall of Fame: Colleen Malek Linehan Makes History

For Dr. Colleen Malek Linehan, hockey has never simply been a sport. It has been part of her life since she first stepped onto the ice as a young girl in Saginaw. In 2026, that journey came full circle when she was inducted into the GSAHA Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class.

The honor also carries special historical significance. Linehan is the first woman inducted into the GSAHA Hockey Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that helped demonstrate what was possible for female hockey players long before girls had many of the opportunities available today.

Linehan grew up playing hockey through the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena Greater Saginaw Amateur Hockey Association and spent countless hours developing her game at the rink. At a time when programs were scarce, she didn't have a traditional girls' high school team waiting for her.

So she played with the boys.

While attending Nouvel Catholic Central, Linehan played on the school's boys hockey team, competing in an era when a girl putting on a high school hockey sweater was still unusual. She graduated from Nouvel in 1993 after lettering in hockey as well as basketball, softball and track.

Her hockey career was far from finished.

Linehan went on to Harvard University, where she played four seasons of varsity women's hockey for the Crimson. By her senior season in 1996–97, the girl who had grown up skating in Saginaw and playing boys high school hockey had become captain of the Harvard women's hockey team.

Her connection to hockey didn't end when her college playing career did.

After Harvard, Linehan attended Wayne State University School of Medicine and eventually returned to as an orthopaedic surgeon. Hockey, however, remained part of the equation. Over the years she has continued to skate, teach the game and encourage women and girls to become involved in hockey.

Today, that work continues behind the bench.

Linehan serves as a coach with the Mid-Michigan Alliance Girls High School program, helping provide young women with something that largely didn't exist when she was their age: the opportunity to play high school hockey on a team built specifically for them.

That made her induction particularly fitting.

During her induction speech, Linehan spoke about her hockey journey while emphasizing the importance of women having a place in the game. It was more than a reflection on what she accomplished. It was a reminder of how much the sport has changed and how much opportunity still lies ahead.

Her induction also represents something larger than one player's career.

When Linehan was growing up, a talented girl who wanted to keep playing hockey often had to find her way into a boys program. Decades later, she now coaches girls who can wear their own high school jerseys, compete against other girls high school teams and build their own hockey traditions.

As the first woman inducted into the GSAHA Hockey Hall of Fame, Colleen Malek Linehan's name will permanently be part of Saginaw hockey history. But perhaps the more important legacy is found on the ice today, in every young girl who walks into the rink carrying a hockey bag and knowing there is a place in the game for her.

Colleen once had to find that place.

Now she's helping make sure the next generation doesn't have to.

GRACE ANDERSON of John Glenn Athletics – A go-getter in everything she does, Grace has traveled a unique path in her pursuits. A three-sport athlete, she competes on the girls varsity hockey team with the Mid-Michigan Alliance as well as in cross country and soccer at Glenn. The team captain earned all-league and all-region honors in soccer. She also takes part in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and is a veterinary assistant at Serenity Equine Facility. A member of NHS, FFA and 4-H, she volunteers at Bay County Animal Services and Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. The Evolution of Mid-Michigan Alliance
How Eleven Schools Became One Team

There is something remarkable about the Mid-Michigan Alliance locker room before a game.

Players arrive from every corner of Mid-Michigan. Some have driven more than an hour to get to the rink. They attend different schools, wear different colors on Friday nights, and come from communities separated by miles of highway. Yet once they lace up their skates and pull on the neon green and black jersey, none of that matters.

For the next two hours, they are simply one team.

That has been the vision of the Mid-Michigan Alliance since the very beginning.

Several years ago, girls throughout the region faced a common challenge. Many schools simply didn't have enough players to support their own varsity girls hockey team. Talented athletes often found themselves traveling long distances to play elsewhere or leaving high school hockey altogether.

Rather than accepting that reality, schools chose to work together.

The Mid-Michigan Alliance was created to ensure that every girl who wanted to experience varsity high school hockey had the opportunity to do so while still representing her school and community. What began as a cooperative effort has steadily grown into one of Michigan's largest girls high school hockey co-ops.

For the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, the Alliance proudly represents eleven schools.

Those schools include H.H. Dow, Heritage, Midland, Bay City Western, Valley Lutheran, Reese, Hemlock, Caro, Montrose, Sandusky, and Ubly.

Each school has its own traditions, rivalries, and community pride. Hockey brings those communities together.

Perhaps the greatest success of the Alliance isn't measured by championships or win totals. It's measured by the friendships formed between players who otherwise may never have met. Freshmen quickly become part of a family. Upperclassmen mentor younger teammates. Travel, practices, and games create memories that last long after the final buzzer.

The program continues to grow because of the dedication of coaches, parents, volunteers, athletic directors, and, most importantly, the student-athletes who choose to be part of something bigger than themselves.

This year's roster also reflects a bright future. With several freshmen and sophomores among the fourteen varsity players, the Alliance has a strong young core that will continue developing together over the next several seasons. That continuity gives the program stability while providing younger players the opportunity to learn from experienced teammates.

The Alliance has never measured success solely by the scoreboard.

Success is giving girls the opportunity to compete for their school, earn varsity letters, build lifelong friendships, and experience everything that makes high school athletics special.

Every season adds another chapter to the story.

Every new player strengthens the program.

Every new school expands the opportunity.

The Mid-Michigan Alliance wasn't built to create just another hockey team.

It was built to create opportunities.

Today, eleven schools skate together under one banner, proving that when communities work together, the possibilities are far greater than any one school could achieve alone.

We're looking for someone with NCAA or ACHA playing experience who is passionate about developing young women both on and off the ice. This is an opportunity to help build one of Michigan's fastest-growing girls high school hockey programs while competing against the best Division 1 and Division 2 teams in the state.

The mail came today... and that's always a good sign that hockey season is getting closer. 🏒

Our Hat Trick, Playmaker, and Shutout pins have officially arrived!

For the past five seasons, Mid-Michigan Alliance Girls High School Hockey has recognized players who reach these milestones with a commemorative pin. We're one of the only girls high school hockey teams to do this, and we're proud that the idea has even spread to other programs like Greater Flint United Phoenix.

When I designed these pins, the goal wasn't just to hand out another award. I wanted players to have something they could proudly display on their years from now. Every pin represents a game they'll never forget and an accomplishment they earned.

Who's going to earn the first one of the 2026-27 season?

High school is about more than hockey. It's about the experience.

Travel hockey certainly has its place, and it can be a great option for some players. But don't overlook what girls high school hockey offers.

High school hockey lets you compete at a high level while still getting to enjoy the moments you'll remember long after your playing days are over. Friday night football games. Homecoming. School dances. Spirit Week. Pep rallies. Graduation with your classmates. Wearing your school's colors and representing something bigger than yourself.

You don't have to choose between being a hockey player and being a high school student.

The reality is that college coaches recruit from both high school and travel hockey. What gets you noticed is your ability, work ethic, academics, and character, not just the logo on your jersey.

Play the game you love. Build lifelong friendships. Earn All-State, Academic All-State, All-Freshman Team, and other high school honors. Create memories with classmates you'll know for the rest of your life.

You only get one high school experience.
