Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento

Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento A vital contributor to Sacramento's performing arts community, presenting light opera since 1982. Mary's Church Choir members to start the St. Mary's Players. S.

The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento (LOTS) was founded in 1982 by Mike and Debbie Baad and Dolores Allen. Drawing on their considerable theater experience, including roles with the Sacramento Opera and Davis Comic Opera, the Baads assembled a core group of St. "H.M.S. Pinafore," the St. Mary's Players' first production in 1982, received rave reviews. Pinafore" was followed in 1983 by "The Pirate

s of Penzance" and in 1984 by the "Mikado." By this time, the St. Mary's Players, drawing on many talented performers from throughout the Sacramento area, had established itself with the theater-going public, and its productions were attracting larger and larger audiences. In its fourth year, the St. Mary's Players became The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento and moved to a new "home" at the Coloma Community Center. In 1989, we moved to our present location at the 24th Street Theater. In addition, LOTS has performed at the Woodland Opera House, Theater El Dorado in Placerville, and in Davis and Roseville. In past years, LOTS has also presented works other than the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, including "Man of La Mancha," and Stephen Sondheim's "Side by Side." LOTS is a member of the Sacramento Area Regional Theater Alliance (SARTA) and a founding member of the League of Sacramento Theatres. Mike and Debbie Baad continue to guide the development of LOTS as Artistic Directors of the organization. The primary goals of LOTS have remained unchanged since its founding:

• Present the comic humor of W. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
• Provide, via an open audition process, an opportunity for local performers to bring their talents to Sacramento audiences
• Promote the performing arts in the Sacramento region

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our dear friend and longtime LOTS performer, Meredyth Rosenberg.

Meredyth first joined the company in THE MIKADO (1990) and performed in nearly every LOTS production through 2018, when a stroke led her to retire from the stage. A devoted member of our soprano chorus, she delighted audiences in notable roles like Jack’s Mother in INTO THE WOODS (2013), the Governess to Major General Stanley’s daughters in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (2016 & 2012), and as Inez in THE GONDOLIERS (2008 & 2001).

Beyond the stage, Meredyth was an invaluable volunteer. She organized cast party potlucks and managed some of our Champagne Galas in the early 1990s.

For nearly thirty years, Meredyth was a cherished part of the LOTS family. We are grateful for the joy, dedication, and kindness she shared with us. She will be deeply missed.

Announcing auditions for our next production, IDA, PRINCESS OF ADAMANT (Gilbert & Sullivan's PRINCESS IDA, modestly adapted to reflect modern views)
Performance dates are August 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 2026

Princess Ida, desperate to escape the patriarchal society she has been raised in, breaks her engagement with Hilarion, the prince her father selected for her when she was a baby, to found Castle Adamant, a women’s university. Prince Hilarion, accompanied by his friends, Cyril and Florian, sneaks into Castle Adamant, attempting to woo the princess. Calamity, hilarity, and a battle between rival kingdoms ensues. Will Princess Ida find love after all? This more modern-minded adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s PRINCESS IDA boasts a beautiful score, catchy lyrics, and one of comic opera’s most interesting heroines. A LOTS company premiere!
