Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento

Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento A vital contributor to Sacramento's performing arts community, presenting light opera since 1982. Mary's Church Choir members to start the St. Mary's Players. S.

The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento (LOTS) was founded in 1982 by Mike and Debbie Baad and Dolores Allen. Drawing on their considerable theater experience, including roles with the Sacramento Opera and Davis Comic Opera, the Baads assembled a core group of St. "H.M.S. Pinafore," the St. Mary's Players' first production in 1982, received rave reviews. Pinafore" was followed in 1983 by "The Pirates of Penzance" and in 1984 by the "Mikado." By this time, the St. Mary's Players, drawing on many talented performers from throughout the Sacramento area, had established itself with the theater-going public, and its productions were attracting larger and larger audiences. In its fourth year, the St. Mary's Players became The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento and moved to a new "home" at the Coloma Community Center. In 1989, we moved to our present location at the 24th Street Theater. In addition, LOTS has performed at the Woodland Opera House, Theater El Dorado in Placerville, and in Davis and Roseville. In past years, LOTS has also presented works other than the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, including "Man of La Mancha," and Stephen Sondheim's "Side by Side." LOTS is a member of the Sacramento Area Regional Theater Alliance (SARTA) and a founding member of the League of Sacramento Theatres. Mike and Debbie Baad continue to guide the development of LOTS as Artistic Directors of the organization. The primary goals of LOTS have remained unchanged since its founding:

• Present the comic humor of W. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
• Provide, via an open audition process, an opportunity for local performers to bring their talents to Sacramento audiences
• Promote the performing arts in the Sacramento region

Announcing auditions for our next production, A CHRISTMAS CAROL & AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS!
AUDITIONS are September 19th and 22nd.

Performance dates are December 4, 5, and 6, 2026:
24th Street Theatre at Sierra 2

A LOTS holiday tradition! A pairing of two holiday gems!

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. On one bitterly cold Christmas Eve, a ruthless miser is swept into a haunting journey by four ghostly visitors. Forced to face the shadows of his past, the cruelty of his present, and the terrifying future that awaits him, he is given one last chance at redemption. This new adaptation has music by Michael G. Leavitt and a libretto adapted by Anthony T. Buck.

Returning for a third year is the timeless Christmas opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors. It is the story of a poor shepherd boy, Amahl, as he and his mother offer hospitality to some unexpected visitors, the Three Wise Men, who are following a glorious star to Bethlehem. During this visit, Amahl’s mother and the Wise Men share a transformative moment of grace and redemption. Amahl’s selfless act of giving leads to a miraculous healing, and he and his mother are blessed with newfound hope and joy. Words and music by Gian-Carlo Menotti. Presented under license by G. Schirmer, Inc., copyright owners.

Both works will be presented staged with a live orchestra.

Our "warriors three" and Melissa wearing the original armor from the 1954 D'Oyly Carté production of PRINCESS IDA. When the company closed in the 1980s, the armor was packed away and remained so until recently.

LOTS's artistic director was able to obtain these pieces via an auction in England, and they have been returned to the stage for the first time in decades in our production of PRINCESS IDA.

Come see our final show, today at 1 pm! Tickets and more information www.lightoperasacramento.org

For more than a century, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company set the gold standard for Gilbert & Sullivan. After the company closed in 1982, many of its historic costumes disappeared into private collections.

Months ago, we spotted a London auction listing for a box of rusty armor from D’Oyly Carte’s Princess Ida. We placed the auction's only bid and won! After many hours of careful restoration, several of these amazing costume pieces are back onstage for LOTS's first-ever production of Princess Ida!

You can see these historic pieces (and our amazing cast and orchestra!) in person August 7-16! Tickets and more information at www.lightoperasacramento.org.

Princess Ida, desperate to escape the patriarchal society she has been raised in, breaks her engagement with Hilarion, the prince her father selected for her when she was a baby, to found Castle Adamant, a women’s university. Prince Hilarion, accompanied by his friends, Cyril and Florian, sneaks into Castle Adamant, attempting to woo the princess. Calamity, hilarity, and a battle between rival kingdoms ensues – but will Princess Ida find love after all? This modern adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s PRINCESS IDA boasts a beautiful score, catchy lyrics, and one of comic opera’s most interesting heroines.
