Emir Gokce
California Avifauna and Conservation

Diversity of avifauna (especially in California), and how they benefit conservation of other species. I will start with taxonomy, moving on to niche occupancy and habitat diversity in California, ecosystem services birds provide for us and end with how birds can be used as umbrella species to protect other species and habitat.

Bio: I was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Attended UC Davis and got my degree in Fish and Wildlife Conservation Biology. During my time in UC Davis I took part in various projects studying several taxa but fell in love with birds (waterfowl particularly). Worked for labs that determined food availability for waterfowl wintering in the Central Valley and went on to do some trapping and banding work for Cal. Fish and Wildlife. I currently work as a Field Biologist for and Environmental Consulting firm.

Alejandro Merchan
Pesticide reporting in California: Story, facts, some policy and a lot of numbers.

In this talk I’ll dwell into the nuts and bolts of pesticide reporting in California, how we started, how we collect the data and some of the information we put out to the public in the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. I’ll discuss the importance of pesticide reporting for worker health and other aspects of conservation. I’ll also mention some of the challenges we face and plans for the future. This is probably way more than you ever thought you needed to know about pesticide reporting.

Bio: Alejandro is a research scientist with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. He has a PhD in Entomology from North Carolina State University and a MSc in Biology from Los Andes university in Colombia. He’s a recent resident of Sacramento and has only spent a few years in California. He likes cats, soccer (or a the world calls it, real football), basketball and spends an inordinate amount of time in front of computers.
