Sacramento Recorder Society

Sacramento Recorder Society The Sacramento Recorder Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. We meet monthly September through June, from 6:45-9:30 p.m.

It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other early music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th St., between H and J. Most of our

meetings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder technique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. The Sacramento Recorder Society is an education organization, not a performing group, but many of our members belong to smaller consorts that do perform. Lots of recorder players performed last night as part of the Sacramento Recorder Society’s Winter Party. This is a short, truncated video of me talking about the 14th century piece Greta and I were about to play: Puisque je sui fumeux (Since I am smoky, full of smoke, …), by Jehan Hasprois. It’s about people (apparently behaviorally challenged) who belonged to a medieval “society of smokers,” and is one of the strangest medieval pieces that we play. I'm hoping that someone made a recording of the piece. With Mark Schiffer and Greta Haug-Hryciw.

This year's Sacramento Recorder Society's Winter Party was so much fun! Lots of groups performed, the food was great, everyone had a good time, and unlike last year we did not have to battle a fierce winter storm to get to the hall!

Such a great meeting last night! Greta was at her finest, encouraging and eliciting our best efforts to play the lovely music that she brought! What a great way to spend an evening!

Here are some more pictures from the Capitol. Sacramento Recorder Society members in two consorts — Sine Nomine and Baroque & Beyond — shared the stage at yesterday's concert in the California State Capitol Rotunda. The acoustics in the Rotunda are quite special, and the wonderful holiday decorations help make it a festive performance. It was lots of fun and the audience was very appreciative.

Sine Nomine and Baroque and Beyond played in the Rotunda at the capitol yesterday. Such a beautiful place to play!
