Synopsis:
Island of Dreams delivers an intimate portrait of Cuba in a time of crisis.

What makes someone leave everything and everyone they know and love, and forego their familiar culture, to make their way into an unknown future in an unknown land? What makes someone stay where they live despite hardship and deprivation?

This documentary follows several Cubans from different walks of life who love their country but struggle with the conflict to stay or leave an increasingly dysfunctional government and rapidly collapsing economy.

Their characters are Cuban, but their voices are universal. Orloff and Jimenez bring a human face to the international crisis of migration.

Island of Dreams shows a Cuba whose people have little hope for the future.

THE SACRIFICE ZONE

Synopsis:
The Sacrifice Zone is a gripping short documentary that follows the Aguirre family of Kern County, California—four generations of Chicano activists whose legacy began with the United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez. Today, they face a new threat: Big Oil’s latest greenwashing scheme known as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). From a deeply human and cultural perspective, the film documents their fight for community health and justice in a region treated as expendable.

But this is more than a local battle. If the Aguirre family fails, Carbon Capture and Storage could be falsely validated and exported across the country—at taxpayer expense—while enriching polluters and endangering lives nationwide.

“The Sacrifice Zone” is a modern David vs. Goliath story, sounding the alarm on a dangerous climate distraction and exposing what’s at stake for us all.

DAYS OF PILGRIMAGE

Synopsis:
Driven by a personal quest for spiritual exploration, a Japanese filmmaker journeys to Mexico to document the Huichol people and their sacred relationship with Hikuri (pe**te). This ancient tradition, central to their culture for 8,000 years, now faces a crisis: the cactus, known to the Huichol as “the sacred medicine,” is being overharvested and faces potential extinction. Through intimate encounters, the film interweaves their ancestral pilgrimage with the filmmaker’s own journey.
