Our mission is simple but powerful: to foster a lifelong love of music, preserve women’s roles in jazz history, and create opportunities for the next generation of musicians.

We provide mentorship, workshops, and performance opportunities designed to inspire girls to find their voice through music. By connecting young talent with experienced musicians and educators, we create a safe, inclusive space where creativity and confidence can grow.

Here's a camp clip of our younger group learning beginner call and response — led by guest artist Jessica Jones. 🎷
Call and response in jazz is a fundamental technique of musical conversation; players alternate between phrases and matching responses in this exercise-a form of life-giving musicality to the genre. The girls practiced call and response in its entirety-hearing each other, matching tone, building trust, and discovering musical collaboration.

It’s the sweetest reminder that growth starts with simple steps, taken together. 💜🥁

And...
The last of our camp recap series 💜
Day 6 — the last day — was truly one for the books.
There was this bittersweet mix of pride and tenderness as we watched the girls wrap up a week of jazz exploration, creativity, and connection. They’ve learned so much more than music: they’ve learned to trust their ideas, to listen deeply, to show up for each other, to take risks and find joy in the process. This is the beginning of uplifting the next generation of girls in jazz, and a meaningful effort to keep America’s historic musical art form alive and thriving.

The recital began with a heartfelt opening speech from Executive Director, Nandi Woodfork-Bey, with an introduction of the girls performing and a recap of the incredible experiences the girls had that week. The remainder of the show represented the growth we witnessed. It’s the kind of moment that reminds you why community matters — why art matters — why these programs stay long with us after they end.

We're picking back up camp recap because Day 5 deserves its own love, even 12 days later!

This was one of those days where everything felt like it clicked — final run throughs of the combo songs that the girls explored throughout the week, staff jumping into a jam session that filled the whole space with joy and role-modeling through music, and the kindest words shared as everyone looked ahead to a year of their creative endeavors, with TGJBS Camp 2026 being the stepping stone to their journeys.

There was something so tender about watching them step into their sound — not just playing notes, but trusting themselves, trusting each other, and realizing they’re capable of more than they knew.
Day 5 was full of reminders that sisterhood is built in these tiny moments: a nod across the room, a “you’ve got this,” a laugh during class sessions, a staff member sharing a story that lands at exactly the right time.

🎶 Camp Days 2 & 3 Recap!💙✨

Our campers have been hard at work developing their musicianship, rehearsing jazz classics like “All of Me,” “Mr. P.C.,” “Satin Doll,” “Blue Monk,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Every rehearsal has been filled with collaboration, creativity, and growing confidence as our young musicians prepare for their recital on Saturday, ready to showcase what they’ve learned at camp to their families!

Beyond music, the girls have also been participating in our Social-Emotional Wellness Workshops, designed for both our younger and older age groups. Through engaging activities and meaningful conversations, campers explore confidence, self-expression, communication, emotional awareness, and the importance of supporting one another—skills that are just as valuable on stage as they are in everyday life as they navigate either the music industry in the future, or the world.

This is what uplifting girls and young women in jazz starts with. 💜🎶

One of our favorite confidence-building activities this summer, designed by guest artist Jessica Jones, encouraged campers to reflect on the qualities that make them unique musicians. Each girl identified her strengths, celebrated her growth, and prepared thoughtful questions for our Zoom conversations with two inspiring all-girls’ jazz programs, Global JazzWomen and Girls Jazz & Groove Camp at The Jazzschool.

We’re proud to create spaces where girls can learn from one another, connect with role models, and discover that they belong in music. 🌟

Day one is in the books. Rooms today were filled with excitment, music, and skill-building on their instruments. They learned the basics of chosen jazz standards and studied core principals of song structure and melody. With 7 incredible instructors and a phenomenal team who's helped make this possible, we are set for a memorable week together!

In two days, our camp doors will officially open! By the end of the week she will have played in a band, learned the women who built this music, and stood on a stage.

That is what this countdown is really about. Not just a camp starting, but the beginning of a lifelong community committed to women's roles in music-making.

In under a minute she breaks down the opening of "Summertime," one of the most loved melodies in all of jazz, so a brand new player can try it right away.

No squeaks to fear. No years of waiting. Just a girl, a clarinet, and a song she already knows.

The instruments are ready. The teachers are ready. We cannot wait to meet this year's group and watch what they build together in one unforgettable week.
