"When the Sun Recedes"
From the windowpane, a clouded sky swells
like painful memories
Colored grey, a darker season
When unpredictable rainclouds covered the light
That mirrored the spirit of my youth
In my naivety, I thought the sun would never fade,
That life would be clear as blue skies always
Unlike that wet, murky day
we drove the slick freeway home
barely seeing out the car windows,
windshield wipers struggling to give clarity
I think about what had become of me
As foggy eyes meet mine through the side rearview,
The haze blocking my gaze of the child who glowed
Like the sun at high noon
Running through sprinklers, giggling in a warmth
We thought we’d always feel.
We drive through puddled roads and trees rattling
In thrashing winds
and I wonder if I will ever feel light again
No sign of a storm’s end.
I revisit those memories from time to time
When the sun recedes behind grey hues
And thank God for the moments it resurfaces.
