Art by Alisa Freshman year in college, I decided to take a beginning drawing class for fun. That class--and one drawing of a paper bag--set the course for me.

Although I had no idea what kind of career I would pursue with an art degree, I knew I wanted to be an art major. Sadly, after graduating, there was no longer 24-hour access to a studio, and apartment living was not conducive to the kind of art I was accustomed to creating. Had I only known about colored pencils then! Fast forward through marriages, children and work, and so many missed opportunit

ies to put my talent to use. Finally, a few years ago, I discovered colored pencils and their magic! Not much studio space required, no messy paints and clean-ups, very portable to take almost anywhere, not to mention how incredible they are. The beautiful colors, the smell when you open a fresh box, the buttery creaminess when laying down the colors--oh my! I knew this was the way to go for me. Paints still beckon me as well, and recently I'm trying my hand with pastels, but the colored pencil really suits my style of work.
