The countdown begins! The Festival kicks off two weeks from today on Thursday May 30 at The Casual Pint (Huntsville), where The Cigar Box Guitar Store and Originally Huntsville team up for all original music performed by local artists on cigar box instruments. Music begins at 7:00 pm with trio Lowelife, followed by one-man band John Nickel and concluding with local favorite Tim Cannon Music. There will be three more days of events at four other locations, including rock and blues on Friday night; music, dancing and kids activities during the day on Saturday; an evening concert with Grammy-winner Gary Nichols on Saturday night; and jazz brunch on Sunday. All activities benefit Arts Huntsville’s Creative Launchpad and the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation. Complete details at CigarBoxGuitarFestival.com

Check out this “make your own” CBG kit from Nickel Cigar Box Guitars out of Huntsville, Alabama. The building kit comes with the neck and hardware, so all you need is a sturdy cigar box (or whatever other contraption you can find) and you can get to DIY-ing. Right On!

Dr. Lonnie Smith now plays a Nickajack. Here's a little info on him. Smith has performed at several prominent jazz festivals with artists including Grover Washington, Jr., Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Lou Donaldson and Ron Holloway. He has also played with musicians outside of jazz, such as Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Etta James, Joan Cartwright, and Esther Phillips. He has also performed on over 60 blues albums and is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
