Thought I would share one of my favorite videos from last year. I made this 60 pound moon jar on my 50th birthday. They’re not something I make all the time but moon jars represent the beauty of imperfection. It seemed like a fitting project and something I had been thinking about doing for a couple of years. I followed the process of the Korean potters as close as I could after doing extensive research on their process. Throwing off of the hump is one of my favorite techniques and I’ve seen quite a few ways of cutting the pieces off involving using a needle tool or your wire, but I found using a string to be the best way for me to go about it. I’ve been asked numerous times on how I do this so In this video, I explain a little bit more in detail for those interested in learning.

Taking a simple bowl and altering it can add not only unique character, but hide the obvious warping that can happen, especially in a high fire kiln. There’s no such thing as perfect especially in ceramics. One of the first lessons you learn is to accept things for what they are.
