We have some adorable new arrivals to celebrate at the Polk Penguin Conservation Center! 🐧

Three penguin chicks recently hatched — one gentoo and two macaronis. Two of the chicks are being reared in the main penguin habitat and may be visible to the public for the next few weeks.

When the chicks become more mobile, they will transition with their parents to a behind-the-scenes area where the toddler penguins can grow and practice waddling. The chicks will then return to their flock when they are fully developed and able to swim.

Gentoo and macaroni penguins are facing growing challenges in the wild due to changing ocean conditions and shifting food availability.

Caring for penguins here at the Detroit Zoo helps our teams support ongoing conservation and research efforts to better protect these incredible species for the future.

Some of the most beloved faces at the Detroit Zoo are also some of the oldest – and caring for them in their golden years is one of our greatest privileges. 💛

🐺 Kaska, a 16-year-old gray wolf, still keeping a watchful eye over his domain.
🦒 Jabari, the 18-year-old giraffe, who voluntarily presents his hooves for wellness checks – a bond built on years of trust with his keepers.
🫧 Chimpanzee Bubbles, who is all personality at the Great Apes of Harambee habitat – and thriving well beyond what's typical in the wild.
🦩 The flamingo flock, longtime Zoo residents who prove pink only gets more fabulous with age.

Behind every healthy senior animal is an extraordinary team of animal care professionals whose expertise, patience and dedication make this level of care possible. Through years of relationship-building, observation and individualized support, they help ensure our oldest residents continue to thrive. We are grateful for every single one of them.

Across the animal kingdom, social bonds and relationships can take many forms.

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating that diversity through the story of Tootsie and Noelle, two female gentoo penguins at the Detroit Zoo who have paired with one another during each of the last four breeding seasons, including this year.

Both penguins arrived at the Zoo in 2015 as part of the original group that helped open the Polk Penguin Conservation Center. Over the years, our animal care team has observed their bond as they continue to pair with one another each breeding season. At the Detroit Zoo, moments like these help us better understand the animals in our care and inspire curiosity about the natural world.

Tootsie and Noelle’s story is one example of the complexity, connection and individuality that make wildlife so remarkable and a meaningful way to celebrate Pride Month through the lens of nature, learning and compassion.

Be sure to stop by and say hello to Tootsie and Noelle before the month ends!

Sunset at the Zoo supports real, meaningful work behind the scenes. Here are just a few milestones we achieved last year with the help of supporters like you:

🦁 Expert Care: We provided dedicated, individualized care to more than 2,000 animals — including three healthy and thriving lion cubs.

🐦 Conservation: We saw a record-breaking year for the endangered Great Lakes piping plover. Our team contributed to the program by helping to incubate and raise 36 abandoned plover eggs into independent chicks who were released back into the wild.

🎓 Education: We provided 8,356 students and chaperones from classrooms in need with a free day of learning through our Day at the Zoo program.

If there’s one night a year you support the Detroit Zoo, June 18 is it.

Limited tickets are available. Reserve your place: https://detroitzoo.org/events/sunset-at-the-zoo/

Sunset at the Zoo is presented by KeyBank.

Check-up time for the otter pups! 🩺

The Detroit Zoo veterinary team just completed the pup's 4-week health exam. During the exam, it was determined that all three of these adorable otters are female and developing at a healthy rate.

The animal care team will continue to track their progress while the pups stay cozy behind the scenes with their doting mom, Kalee.

We estimate that they will be ready to explore their outdoor habitat sometime in late June. Until then, you can continue to follow these girls' growth on our social media pages.
