🦁 The lion cubs are growing up FAST!

Mosi, Fahari and Aziza will celebrate their first birthdays next month, and they’re getting bigger, bolder and more confident by the day! Around their first year, lion cubs become increasingly independent, spending more time exploring, playing and developing the skills they’ll need as adults.

Here’s what’s happening with this trio of cubs:

🐾 Mosi may be a little more independent than her siblings, but she’s always ready to join in the fun. You may notice her distinctive, pointy head shape is reminiscent of her mom.

🦁 Fahari is starting to show off a very grown-up feature: the beginnings of a mane along the sides of his face and across his chest! In male lions, manes develop as they mature and can continue getting fuller for several years.

🌑 Aziza remains the darkest-colored of the three and is often found teaming up with Fahari for some sibling playtime.

And when it comes to favorite activities? Give these cubs a green hexagon ball and stand back! They love chasing their enrichment items around the yard, turning playtime into a great opportunity to practice coordination, build strength and interact with their surroundings.

You are going to want to see this! 👀

There are way more treats in store for you at Zoo Boo this year. With an earlier start time at 3 p.m., you will have plenty of time to see the animals and even watch them enjoy some fall-themed enrichment.

Follow the treat trail past daring circus acts and enjoy a new special feature for the grown-ups at the secret Spookeasy. Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery trails will also be open all night to play and party in.

Your chance to see the rare Wyoming toad.

This species was listed as endagered in 1984 and was listed as extinct in the wild in 1991. These individuals at the Detroit Zoo are part of a breeding program that is giving this species a fighting chance. Since joining the Wyoming toad Species Survival Program in 2001, we have helped breed and release over 11,000 Wyoming toad tadpoles, toadlets and adults into the wild.

🦍💚 Baby Usala is growing up fast!

Born July 12, Usala is just about three months old — and she’s reaching some exciting milestones! Her first teeth are starting to come in, and mom Tuli is beginning to let her sit up and take in the world around her.

Here are a few fun gorilla baby facts that help explain what we’re seeing with Usala:
🍼 Usala still relies on Tuli for nearly everything. Gorilla infants rely on their moms for nearly everything in their early months, from transportation to nourishment and protection.
👶 Sitting up is an exciting milestone for Usala. Like human babies, young gorillas develop their strength and coordination gradually. Sitting up is an important step toward becoming more independent!
🦷 Those tiny new teeth are another sign Usala is growing. Those tiny new teeth are a sign that Usala is growing and developing, although she’ll continue nursing and relying on Mom for some time.

Watching Usala discover her surroundings is a special glimpse into the early stages of gorilla development — and she has plenty more milestones ahead!
