On this day in 1974-The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film is released to 200 theaters around Texas. A festive Dallas press conference is held. The film is estimated to cost just over $80,000 with the total US gross of over $26 million.

Eventually the film makes an estimated additional $14 million from home video rentals (laserdisc, beta and VHS). But worldwide, it is said to have earned over $100 million.

Total worldwide distribution sales of Texas Chainsaw Massacre from Bryanston Pictures will never accurately be known. Bryanston lacked (destroyed) the evidence to prove how many copies of the film were distributed around the world. Eventually they settled out of court.
