🟣 Animal of the Week: The Purple Sea Urchin
The purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) is a spiny marine creature found along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska. These algae-eating urchins play an important role in ocean ecosystems, but with fewer predators like sea otters and sunflower sea stars, their populations have exploded. The result? Vast underwater "urchin barrens" where once-thriving kelp forests have been completely consumed.
Nature is all about balance—and the purple sea urchin is a perfect example of why every species matters.
