Look who stopped by Njabala Foundation! 🌿✨

We had the immense honor of hosting Dr. Greer Valley (Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial Affairs at Zeitz MOCCA) for a vibrant afternoon of art, community, and conversation.

It was a beautiful collaborative space enriched by artists Aliba Linda, Darren Akoragye, Pamela Enyonu, Laruni Mary, Namala Olivia, and Ale Hahn, alongside our incredible team Nancy Nangobi, Aine Desire, and Nellie Keerera.

Thank you, Dr. Greer Valley, for visiting us and for your profound commitment to the arts. We are so grateful for the shared energy and look forward to the future! 🥂💖

Seni Awa Camara
1945 — 2026 | Bignona, Sénégal

…Like so many before me, I crossed that courtyard to meet Seyni – or rather the image others had fashioned of her, that of a woman described as a magician, a keeper of secrets. I neither sought them nor uncovered them. Her transmission took other paths: in a look, a slow gesture, a way of doing shared without words. I was struck less by her legend than by the reality of her life. Indeed, her living conditions stood in stark contrast to the market that surrounds her works and sends them far from Bignona. And yet she continued. She shaped the earth every day, lived from it and enabled those around her to live. Her work remained above all a space of survival and solidarity, where her entire family stood together…

The Karibu exhibition has come to a close, but the dialogues it sparked are just beginning to breathe.

When we first announced the Karibu opening, we didn’t realize we’d be sharing the date with so many other incredible art spaces around town. Despite the “busy” calendar, you chose to spend your time with us. You turned up in huge numbers, and for that, we are deeply moved. ✊🏾🎨

We heard your feedback—the space was a bit tight! Honestly, having “too many” people wanting to engage with indigenous art forms is the best kind of problem to have. We are already working on securing more space for our next gathering to ensure everyone can engage with the work comfortably.

A massive thank you to:
✨ Our visionary artists and master “artisans”
✨ The tireless NF team and volunteers
✨ Our partners and service providers
✨ Our funder for making this process possible

Karibu was a journey of “proof of process,” and we are just getting started.

“Inheritance, like many things, was hijacked by colonialism and capitalism; as a result, we now see everything through a white-washed lens. The practice and art of traditional mat-making is part of our inheritance, our heritage, our story amidst so many narratives that were written about us, but rarely by us.”

-Omukeeka: Craft, Labour & Recognition by Desire Aine-

Desire Aine (.co) is a Uganda-based curator and cultural practitioner interested in care, sustainability, and non-extractive cultural practice. Her work explores womanhood, invisible labour, cultural memory, healing as political practice, and alternative economies of care. Through exhibitions, writing, and community-centred formats, she develops projects that prioritise relational processes, collective authorship, and shared meaning-making. Her participation in the Sharjah Architecture Triennial in 2023 marked a formative moment in her transition into curatorial practice, shaping her thinking around adaptability, impermanence, and sustainable space-making. She is the founder of SaAsi soCiety, a platform exploring care-based cultural production in Global South contexts.
