Lorene Johnson Gratton Workshop:
Inner Worlds and Other Minds
Ash Eliza Willams
June 27 & 28, 2026

"Inner Worlds and Other Minds” is a beginner-level oil painting workshop focused on exploring the inner worlds or “Umwelten” of non-human creatures. On day one, students will learn the basics of oil painting along with various techniques for expressing emotion and memory through color, texture, and gesture. Each student will then be paired with a non-human being (an animal, plant, or mineral) and will investigate these beings using all their senses. On the second day, students will be guided through prompts and questions and will create a series of studies that vividly celebrate the imagined inner world of the creature they were paired with.

The Lorene Johnson Gratton Workshops were established through a generous endowment created by Roswell artist and longtime museum supporter Lorene Johnson Gratton. After studying art at the Roswell Museum and Art Center as a young student in the 1930s, Gratton remained deeply connected to the Museum throughout her life and believed strongly in making arts education accessible to the community. Today, the endowment supports affordable, high-quality workshops led by working artists from across the country.

Mornings with O’Keeffe: Moments and Materials | Discovering Questions Posed by “Ram’s Skull with Brown Leaves,” 1936

This event was presented in April by our friends at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. In it, they talk about the history of "Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves" from the Roswell Museum collection, and the conservation that's been done to it. While the painting itself wasn't directly impacted by the October 2024 flood, the frame was slightly submerged. Watch the video and hear about what the O'Keeffe did to reframe and protect this much loved work from our collection.

Memorial Day serves as a solemn tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States. Thank you to all who serve.

During WWII Howard Cook was an artist for the US Army. When he was serving as a war art correspondent in the South Pacific, Cook participated in the Invasion of Rendova, which was an intense experience for him.

"It is so very difficult for us to actually get a look at this Pacific War as there is no "front" in the usual sense of the word, the front is all over the place and is always hidden."

Howard Cook (1901-1980) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and lived in Taos, Roswell and Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife, Barbara Latham, another RAiR artist in residence. Together, they helped launch the RAiR program over a decade during the winter months starting in 1967.

On May 22, 1980, the arcade game Pac-Man was released.
The game featuring a dot-munching round yellow figure moving through a maze has become one of the best-known video games in history. It was produced by Namco.

Although there isn't a portrait of Pac-Man in the collection, we think "Print Collage" evokes the bright colors most people associate with the main character and the ghosts that chase him through the game's grid-like maze.

In his early works, Charles Hinman experimented with defining space through color. Although his art would become much more sculptural in later years, the early hints of that progression are visible in this collage, which is not painted but made of layered sheets of thick, neon-colored paper that make this work subtly three-dimensional.

"My concept of my work is dynamic---never static. I think of my paintings as occupying a 6-dimensional space… the three dimensions of space and one each of time, light and color… Further, the choice of adjacent colors causes a sensation of motion of the surfaces"

The International Day of Families is observed each year on May 15. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, this day serves as a platform to recognize the value of families in society and to encourage policies that support family well-being, equality, and development. It brings attention to the ways families shape communities and influence progress across education, health, employment, and social inclusion.

We hope you have time to spend with your (nuclear, single-parent, extended, blended, adoptive/foster or chosen) families today.

Elmer Schooley
Landscape painter and lithograph artist Elmer “Skinny” Schooley (1916-2007) was born in Lawrence, Kansas. He obtained his BFA from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1938 and his MA in Painting at the State University of Iowa in 1942. After serving in the Air Force during World War II, Skinny taught painting and printmaking at the New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas from 1947 to 1977. He became Head of the Art Department in 1956. He founded the university gallery and the first lithographic workshop in the state. Skinny’s prints and paintings are in the collections of, amongst others, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He won over thirty art prizes between 1949 and 1964, culminating with the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in Visual Arts in 1986. After Skinny and his wife, artist Gussie DuJardin, participated in the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program from 1977-78, they permanently relocated to Roswell across from the Program’s facility. They were mentors and friends to the artists-in-residence for more than two decades. Their artworks were co-exhibited in a retrospective exhibition at the Roswell Museum and Art Center in 2003-04.
