Russ Abbott

Russ Abbott A tattoo artist in Roswell, Georgia specializing in ornamental and illustrative tattooing.

My home town of Forsyth County, Georgia has banned tattooing as "adult entertainment". The very notion that tattoo studios should have to operate in the shadows is an outdated and obsolete view. I feel it's time we bring an end to TATTOO STIGMA in our towns, our states, and our workplaces.

Back in 2015, a bunch of you supported the Abbott Color Wheel on Kickstarter and many more collected them from suppliers around the world. I love hearing from people who say that it helped unlock color tattooing for them!

A long time dream may be coming true for me. This year, I’m building a tattoo ink system from the ground up. I’ll be working directly with the experts and asking the tough questions I’ve been wanting to ask. I’m going as deep as I possibly can on this and I’m treating it with the upmost care.

If you want to tell me something to look out for or you have a question you’d like to know an answer to, let me know. I have the opportunity to help facilitate a better product and improve education for future generations of tattoo artists so let’s hear about specific problems you’ve had with your inks in the past. Let’s hear what colors you love too! What colors you can’t live without.

Throughout the year, I’ll also try to share a bit of the discovery process and reveal more of what I’m working on and what I’m learning along the way.

Back in 2014, I set out to organize the entire line of Eternal Ink into a color system that included a color wheel, with each ink arranged by hue and value, along with a series of gamut masks that allow the artist to quickly visualize color schemes. This was a prototype that was printed and glued to a double LP record package. I’ll post the final printed and manufactured 1st edition soon, but I wanted to share some of the work that came first as I’m currently embarking on a new project that would never have been possible for me if I didn’t do this first. If you want to learn how deep the color theory rabbit hole goes, I recommend you to follow the account Peter Donahue and follow along here as I attempt to develop the next tattoo color system using everything I’ve learned in the last decade.

It’s been over 10 years since the Abbott Color Wheel came out. Now, I’m developing a new color system from the ground up. Follow along for process and BTS. Eventually, I’ll offer live workshops where artists can learn about tattoo inks and color theory.

Here’s a look at an in progress kumiko-inspired ornamental project. This one’s got loads of heavy black and the scrollwork will be rendered in olive tones with teal reflective light.

I can start 2-3 more Kumiko projects in the next couple of months.

Everybody has that thing they obsess about that other people can’t comprehend. Me? I have Kumiko. So I convinced and to take a train 3 hours from Osaka to Toyama Japan to visit the craft lounge and headquarters… to gain a deeper understanding of why I’m so obsessed with this craft. If you like my kumiko tattoos, I hope this video gives you a better sense of where this style originates.

Have you ever experienced Japanese Wagyu? It’s decadent and melts in your mouth. I don’t know if there’s a better argument for being a carnivore.

X collab! I’ve been following Adam’s account for several years and recently I saw a piece that caught my eye and led me to reach out for a custom piece. Turns out he’s been a fan of my work for a while too and we decided to make it a creative collab project. Kumiko patterns inspired by Japanese woodworking have become a huge part of my tattoo work over the last couple of years. I’ve got lots more tattoos in this style coming your way. The patterns available are numerous and if you send me a dm I can forward a kumiko design catalog that I prepared for you to choose from. Adam is open to making more of these engraved pendants so if you want a kumiko design engraved on a pendant, also let me know.
