"Donna, though a grown woman and different from me in many ways, is also similar to me in others. She grieves, not death, but the loss of her daughter Sophie’s childhood as Sophie prepares to begin a new chapter of life through marriage. In many ways, I relate to Donna. I’ve become a bit of a sap when it comes to nostalgia. The idea of losing people over time, losing friendships, and even losing parts of ourselves as we grow and change is difficult to accept. However, one thing I’ve come to believe is that a piece of me will always stay the same, and I’m proud to say that piece is theatre." - Taylor Hedemark , Donna Sheridan in Romeoville High School's production of "Mamma Mia!" 📷: Delaney Thurston

"Rosie, the comedic best friend who is unapologetically herself, taught me that the key to success is simply being who you are. Throughout this journey, I also became more conscious of who I am as a Latina actress and more in touch with my Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. Getting the privilege to sing a song like “Chiquitita,” which has touched the hearts of so many of my Spanish-speaking relatives, is an accomplishment I am very proud of. My grandfather came to me after closing night and told me, with a smile in his eyes, how much he loved hearing me sing it. My Puerto Rican father couldn’t stop telling me how many of the "Mamma Mia!" songs he knew in Spanish. In that moment, I realized my performance connected my family, my culture, and my love of theatre." - Danielle Ocasio, Rosie in Romeoville High School's production of "Mamma Mia!" 📷: Delaney Thurston

This is the first year that IHSMTA is honoring the incredible work of students involved in tech, and we’re so proud of Paulette for applying for the Backstage Champion award and for the work that she and all of our crew did to make Mamma Mia! so amazing!🌺

"Creating these costumes allowed me to gain confidence, patience, and perseverance. My experience wasn’t smooth sailing; we got frustrated many times. There were many pricks from needles, burns from hot glue, quick fixes to be made, but each time we got stressed, I remembered that we were here to help each other and have fun. I never realized just how difficult costume making could be until "Mamma Mia!". Making the Dynamo costumes was an experience that I would do all over again. The first time we saw the costumes onstage is a feeling I cannot describe other than pure joy. I am forever grateful to have worked with such an amazing crew." - Paulette Vazquez, Makeup/Wigs, Romeoville High School's production of "Mamma Mia!"

"When Sophie feels the most conflicted, she realizes that the identity of her father isn’t the most important thing. The most important thing is having loved ones who care about her, and keeping a close bond with her mother. She realizes that her biological identity isn’t what really matters; it’s how she treats others. By calling off her own wedding, she shows that self-love is the best kind of love and that she can always count on herself and her village." - Jase Heavens, Sophie Sheridan in Romeoville High School's production of "Mamma Mia!" 📷: .tfilms
