Music technologist/digital media artist Michael Marans has spent a lifetime transforming fundamental elements of sound into musically expressive works. Inspired by his Southern Oregon environs, he now directs his technical and artistic energies to image creation. Marans describes his creative process as visual sound design, likening his software drawing tools to the parameters of audio synthesizer

s—instruments with which he’s been intimately involved for nearly 50 years. “Audio synthesis entails altering a basic waveform with a set of musically useful electronic functions to create the desired sound,” he explains. “In these works, my photographs are the basic waveforms, and I manipulate them with a set of aesthetically useful software functions to create the desired visual effect.”

His iterative technique exploits dynamic interplay among a nearly endless array of image elements, allowing a single photograph to become the source of multiple, diverse variations—each one a unique re-synthesis of the original. I’m totally stoked to announce that I’m one of six founding resident artists at the new HIVVE ART HUBB in Grants Pass!

As the name suggests, we’re based in the awesome Hivve building in downtown GP, with the gallery hosted in the beautiful upstairs performance space. We launch officially in just a few weeks with an April 5th First Friday party and art show, "6 by Six," featuring works by the six founders. (So honored to be included among my very talented compadres!) Art, music (Jesse Kennemer!) food, wine, and a beautiful space to take it all in… If you’re anywhere near GP on the 5th, you want to BE THERE!

We’re also using this event to showcase our planned activities as an artist collective, which include expanding the group to embrace more local artists and hosting gallery showings, workshops, classes, and more to foster community awareness and support for the Josephine County art scene.
