The Ozarks Philharmonic Youth Orchestras program offers young musicians in Northwest Arkansas, and the surrounding areas the opportunity to develop their musical interests and talents. By providing an orchestral experience available to all students, the vision of the OPYO, under the direction of David Barg, is to become a musical voice that embraces the entire Northwest Arkansas community. OPYO pr

ovides a creative environment where young musicians share a love for music and a willingness to spend their Monday afternoons rehearsing and playing together. As the area's only regional youth orchestra, OPYO is highly regarded for its commitment to the finest quality music education, expanding community engagement, and sensitivity to the musical, social, and emotional needs of its young musicians. Currently, there are close to 100 students from NWA and Missouri - - some traveling over 100 miles round trip - to attend OPYO rehearsals. Ranging in age from 8 to 18, they participate in three orchestras: Andante, Presto, and Youth Symphony Orchestra, and study under the expert guidance of some of NWA's most respected musician-educators. The musicians represent a rich diversity of ethnic background, religion and socioeconomic circumstances. OPYO emphasizes cooperation, encouragement and mutual respect in an nurturing, supportive environment. Through the year, OPYO has stimulated young people to reach higher and achieve more, both as musicians and as responsible, confident young people. Along with the proven brain-enhancing benefits of music education, OPYO develops the human aspects of self-discipline, reliability, flexibility, cooperation and self-esteem....attitude skills that will last a lifetime!

Our Story

By providing an orchestral experience available to all students, the vision of the OPYO, under the direction of Dr. Robert Mueller, is to become a musical voice that embraces the entire Ozark community. OPYO provides a creative environment where young musicians share a love for music and a willingness to spend their Monday afternoons rehearsing and playing together. Since 1984, over 1500 children have been educated and inspired by their participation in the Ozarks Philharmonic Youth Orchestras. As the area's only regional youth orchestra, OPYO is highly regarded for its commitment to the finest quality music education, expanding community engagement, and sensitivity to the musical, social, and emotional needs of its young musicians. We emphasize performance, with multiple public events throughout the year. Currently, students from all around the Ozarks, ranging in age from 8 to 18 participate in three orchestras: Andante, Presto, and Youth Symphony Orchestra, and study under the expert guidance of some of NWA's most respected musician-educators. The musicians represent a rich diversity of ethnic background, religion and socioeconomic circumstances. OPYO emphasizes cooperation, encouragement and mutual respect in an nurturing, supportive environment. Through the years, OPYO has stimulated young people to reach higher and achieve more, both as musicians and as responsible, confident young people.
