Diosa Agave. Agave goddess. I usually share my painting work, and is not that difficult to imagine how I pass my drawings on paper to the wall. But when I do sculpture, than transition is completely different.
When I created this concept I didn’t imagine the amount of technical issues I would face. I decided to do make it in ceramic, and because of its size, the challenge was bigger than me. I needed help from several experts in firing large pieces of clay, and because I created the original piece very far from the kiln, I broke it. When I decided to fire small masks first in the new large scale kiln of one of my friends, we blown all the pieces in the process… it was so hard to actually find the place ceramic Studio where I could create and firing the piece in situ. The incredible community from welcomed me and helped me to navigate the entire production of this piece. In the last picture, the already fired clay has this gorgeous bone color, that makes it look ethereal, ancient.
The concept is based is Mexican elements of culture and the associated Mexica elements come from my personal Mexica heritage. The Rabbit and the Moon, the female deity, the mask pf Ehecatl, god of rain, are all related to fertility, harvesting, liquid and perfume. I did this commission for Rafael Rios in 2019.
