Much of Lauren Elder’s work focuses on time and ancestry. “I draw from my Iraqi, Persian, Scottish, and British heritage, looking at artifacts and symbols to better understand where I come from and how I exist within this moment.”

Flora Saldivar’s “bleeding colors” technique is another motif often seen in her body of work, where one color appears to shed another. She likes to think of this visual as the process of one world slowly transforming and informing the other. By allowing the pigment to push through the textile, she creates what she calls “ghost layers,” subtle imprints that visually showcase how the past continuously informs the present.

Lauren Elder’s elaborate assemblages that combine ceramic, steel, and inscribed found objects play with how collective memories and cultural archetypes transform across place and time. Rather than illustrating a single story, her work creates spaces where meaning is built through layering, transformation, and the process of making itself.

In collaboration with artist, Flora Saldivar, view Elder’s work at MIXD Gallery until September 24.

Rejecting off-the-shelf materials, Flora Saldivar utilizes custom gouache color blends for her soak-stain application. This unique innovation allows the pigment to truly absorb into the raw support without compromising the material, a unique advantage over predecessors who used oil.

In collaboration with artist, Lauren Elder, view Saldivar’s work at MIXD Gallery until September 24.

We’ve been in awe of how the works of Flora Saldivar and Lauren Elder work together in this show. The reason they complement each other so seamlessly is the powerful visual contrast and balance between the fluid and the structural.

While Saldivar’s translucent stain paintings capture memory as a fleeting, soaked-in emotion, Elder’s ceramic and mixed-media sculptures ground those same ideas as structural, calcified objects. Together, their works create a beautiful dialogue between what fades, what endures, and what is remade.

Experience Field Notes on Memory at the gallery now through September 24th.

OPENING NIGHT:
THURSDAY, AUGUST 13TH

“Field Notes on Memory” explores how identity is recorded both as a fleeting, soaked-in emotion and as a calcified, structural object.
