Hey everyone, I am Angie Gomez’ husband . I now manage her social media and will post on her behalf from this point forward.
Angie was diagnosed with a brain tumor on October 2022. Although she underwent treatment, she had a more aggressive recurrence and was diagnosed with a stage 4 tumor. She is currently undergoing radiation to try to freeze the tumor’s growth as much as possible. Our hope is that she has better quality of life for as long as possible.
Angie will not produce any more artwork. But I will be sharing some of the stories behind the pieces she made during her art career. Her artwork is significant and took a unique approach. She innovated and spoke with the language of her life experience. She incorporated materials and practices from her upbringing and the jobs she had prior to dedicating herself to creating artwork for a living.
In this piece she shared about change and transformation. She created this piece with textile materials that she cut for creating quilts. Butterflies were a fascination for her. In this piece the transformation she spoke about was the second transformation of the butterfly; when she returns to the earth. This piece is titled Fading Away.
She had this inspiration when we were walking on the trail by our old apartment. We came up to a dying butterfly. We stopped and scooped it and walked back home with her in our arm. Her wings were slowly getting more and more still. We spoke to her and told her she would be safe. Until she stopped moving. We felt it was such a deep moment but the butterfly did not go alone nor was she surrounded by the perils of the trail.
This piece was chosen for one of the exhibits at the Fort Smith art museum for a group show.
