This watercolor is an English subject by a very good, late 19th Century Scottish artist, James Garden Laing. He was born mid-19th Century and executed this bucolic image around the turn of the Century. Laing contrasted the bucolic setting of St. Mary's Church with a steam barge transporting agricultural produce into Ipswich. thistlefinearts.com - [email protected]

I've done little to promote my presence on Facebook beyond the occasional ad, so I'm unsure if anything I write here is read by more than a handful of people. In addition to a gallery of art images and descriptions, however, there is a blog in which I've attempted to offer a rationale or explanation for what my website is designed to achieve.

So, here is a link to the Blog page at Thistle Fine Art - https://www.thistlefinearts.com/2022/06/27/blog/ .

A blog about a personal collection of art.

My website is nearing completion. All I need now are visitors to encourage Google to see all the pages and add them to searches. In an attempt to accomplish that, I'm going to post a link here on Facebook for every artist in the gallery - beginning with Hervey Cadwallader Adams RBA, NS
(English) 1903-1996
Rustic Still Life, gouache, signed l/r,
15.74″ x 19.87″ unframed.

I promised to post another of my "favorites" by the end of last week. I'm late, but here it is! In fact, I've forced myself to choose my most favorite painting - a watercolor by Charles J. De Lacy. He was an English artist who specialized in marine art and illustrated many publications on the subject. For more information, visit https://thistlefinearts.com.

In 1998, I bought a painting on eBay for $270. It is quite large and we were about to move from Arkansas to Massachusetts, so I didn't bother unpacking it. It is still packed (along with a few other items!), so I've no idea what I bought! The description by the seller was - "Original oil on canvas depicts a Mediterranean country's port with hills and homes surrounding. Quite lovely and simply painted it gives a calming effect. Judging from frame and backside probably circa 1920's. Canvas could use restretching otherwise no damage. Measures 44" wide by 22.5" tall." At the time of purchase, HD digital images had not been invented, so the photo below doesn't provide any detail or insight into the quality of the painting. I've seen a lot of Italian paintings of the late 19th/early 20th centuries and I bought it as another example of Italian painting. If anyone is interested, respond here or on my website - https://thistlefinearts.com.

I'm posting another watercolor image, but it's not one of my "favorites". It IS a nice painting, though, and one of the first that I bought (in Edinburgh about 1970). Signed with initials and inscribed "Conway, 1901". Offers over $150.

The artist was Alexander L. Gillespie. Not well known away from Edinburgh but when I was living there his work was well recognized and I was told (and subsequently read) that his blue (cobalt) watercolor pigments were mixed with blue ink. This watercolor is a good example of that practice.
