The passing of Dolly Parton leaves an enormous empty space in the world of entertainment.
From a theatre perspective, Dolly represented nearly everything we celebrate on a stage — music, storytelling, drama, comedy, costume, character, showmanship and, above all, professionalism. She understood that entertaining an audience was both an art and a craft, and she practiced both with remarkable excellence throughout her life.
This performance with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt has always been a favorite. Strip away much of the spectacle for which Dolly was famous, put three extraordinary voices together around a beautiful song, and the talent speaks for itself.
Dolly knew how to command the biggest stage in the world, but she also knew when to simply stand there and sing.
Thank you for the music, the laughter, the stories and the example. Rest well, Dolly.
