📣MARK YOUR CALENDARS!📣

The Women Soaring Project (WSP) is excited to invite Betty Yee to a conversation about Asian American women in politics on Monday, April 15th at 12:30pm-1:50pm PT as a hybrid event taking place both online via Zoom and in-person at Sierra College in room D-12.

Yee is the former state controller from 2015-2023 for California, the fifth largest economy in the world. She has been a leading advocate for people and the planet as well as a non-profit leader. Born in San Francisco to Chinese immigrant parents, Yee and her four sisters shared a sofa bed in a one-room apartment behind the family’s dry-cleaning business. Because her parents did not speak English, she began at the age of eight managing the books and dealing with suppliers and banks to help with the family business. Betty Yee will be the first Asian American woman to run for governor of California in 2026.

This special WSP event with Betty Yee highlights the achievements of Women Politicians while bridging the celebration of Women’s History Month in March and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month in May. The event is being moderated by Sierra College Political Science Professor Betty Chan and Sierra College Student Senate President Joselin Pacheco-Hernandez and is endorsed by Sierra College’s Gender Equity Committee and the Empowering Asian Students (EAS) Community. We hope to see you online or in-person soon!

📣 We are excited to announce “Giant Kelp Study 18” by Oriana Poindexter as the winning piece from the submissions we received for WSP’s "Women Environmentalists" art exhibit.

Oriana is a San Diego-based marine scientist and photographer who freedives and collects specimens from the ocean and documents them using cyanotypes, one of the oldest photographic printing processes which was made popular by a woman botanist, Anna Atkins, in 1843. Her work intersects science, art and notable women in history.

We spoke with Oriana at length about her work, which you can check out on our site along with the “Women Environmentalists” art exhibit in the WSP Gallery.

Thank you to everyone for participating and celebrating women in history!

🎉Our very own Jane received the 2023 Hayward Award from the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges! 🎊

She is one of four recipients in the entire California community college system, and this prestigious honor exemplifies the incredible impact she has made at Sierra College. It’s not a surprise to me because I know how hard she works, but I wanted to broadcast how proud we are of her. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jane Le Skaife for her commitment to her students, colleagues, and education! 👏👏👏

Mark your calendars for this special event!
