Sarah's "Fire And Ice" Statement:
“Lately I’ve been painting from direct observation outside and in the studio from my imagination, a quick glance, sketch, photo, or memory. In paintings I change and invent as needed. As I note the presence and influence of heavenly bodies, sometimes day becomes night. Suns turn into moons and bright moons resemble dark suns. Seasons morph too as I paint warm winters and chilly summers. These apparent dualities are one to me, and hold darkness and radiance simultaneously. I love hanging out with nature in places where deep time is evident, often at the edge of the sea alongside residues of glaciers and ice age activity. Doing so reminds me of how this landscape was shaped and how elemental energies continue to form and reform beloved locales here in Maine/Dawnland. Long ago hot cosmic soup cooled into granite and basalt. And glaciers receded, dropping sand and rocks. There they sit today. When the seas rose, islands formed. There they remain in their perfect disorder.
The ocean is rising again. Winters and summers are heating up and cooling further. Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice” comes to mind. The world is still beautiful while it burns and freezes. I notice and inquire: what’s happening out in nature compared to what’s happening inside me? I’m nature too. We’re made up of the same elements, the landscape and me. We share an animating consciousness that’s ever-present and ever-renewing. I pay attention, align myself with what is, and move some paint around in response. Because that’s what I love to do and know how to do: be with whatever’s happening and respond.” -Sarah Faragher
