Kenny Cole: Like There's No Tomorrow

Opening Reception Friday August 5th, 5-8pm

"Like There's No Tomorrow" brings together over thirty of Kenny Cole's most recent works, showcasing the surreal and humorous aspects of his steadfastly political work. While well-known for his immersive installations that pursue difficult explorations into the underlying logic of militarism and the cultural embrace of technologies, "Like There's No Tomorrow" will draw from his huge output of stand-alone paintings in gouache and acrylic. Rather than a single political narrative, the works in "Like There's No Tomorrow" exist as a chaotic dreamscape full of the signs of today's seemingly unresolvable issues.

In his own words: "It is a fitful daily grab bag that presents a cumulative narrative, replete with patterns, discoveries and telling imbalance. It is more pictorial, imagistic and shamanistic than past projects, in terms of digging into cultural structures and seeking keys that might unlock the logic of our current trajectories." In these works, Cole juxtaposes the imagery of war, oil, money and passages of techno-text with mythical figures in an exploration of the ethical dilemmas of technological seduction and arrogance. With their iconography of Uncle Sams, leprechauns, Santas, oil rigs, and war planes, the works are dream-like and cartoony, even as they are dark or outright condemning in their implications.

Kenny Cole was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, studied painting at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute, and took part in New York's East Village scene of galleries, alternative spaces, and nightclubs before moving to Maine in 1994 and settling in Belfast. He has exhibited widely in museums and galleries in Maine, New York City, and beyond, including the University of Maine Museum of Art, Bangor and the Center for Maine contemporary Art (CMCA). Kenny maintains an extensive archive at kennycole.com. This is his first exhibition with Win Wilder Hall.

June Art and Public History event,

A two-venue artist-curated project co-hosted by Asymmetrick Arts and Win Wilder Hall.

Guest-curated by interdisciplinary artist Alexis Iammarino, Hole History: Origins of American-Style Donut draws together artists, authors, and historians in an open-submission-driven mix of art and public history. A local tale broadly and boldly claims the the hole-in-the-donut was singularly invented by a 19th century sea captain from the Midcoast of Maine. Therein lies some truth and this tale provides a specific but expansive conceptual terrain in which to gather images and narratives relating equally to authenticity, tall tales, and toroid geometry: anything and everything relating to the iconic American pastry.

Works and memorabilia-on-loan, will represent individuals and mediums from a broad geography and a diverse set of responses to the theme.

The show will be on view from June 3rd (National Donut Day) to June 25th at both Asymmetrick Arts, 405 Main Street, and Win Wilder Hall, 328 Main Street in Rockland.

Alexis Iammarino is a Rockland, Maine based artist whose work encompasses painting, film, and mural works as well as choreography, performance, and community education projects. She has performed and exhibited works throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well as California and Italy. Locally, she works as a teaching artist and mural arts director with local organizations and, in 2015, completed a large scale mural on Oak Street, Rockland, as part of the Farnsworth Museum's education program and Iammarino's SaturdayStudio Rockland.

Win Wilder Hall is proud to present Suzanna Frosch: New Work, guest-curated by Warren Seelig.

Opening Friday September 4th, 6 - 8 pm.
On view through October 30th.

Win Wilder Hall is proud to present new works by artist and designer Suzanna Frosch in a show of mixed media works that draw from both her background in woven textile design and her engagement with natural biological pattern. In her own words: "I am a scavenger by nature, drawn to the language and challenges of collage: disparate elements sitting in balance, creating a visual calm, an imbalanced harmony.... I have taken with me the vocabulary of a weaver and brought it to paintings, constructions, castings, and collage".

Frosch's new works incorporate the yellowed pages of old books for a complex interplay between man-made and natural pattern. She writes: "I am exploring the patterns, rhythms, and subtleties in type and color-shifting of old books." Book pages are used both as dynamic foreground shapes and as an activated ground for overlaid painted forms. Certain works emphasize the linear qualities shared by weaving and printed text, but in others the interaction of pattern feels natural and biological, creating surfaces that "are both architectonic and organic in their memory and visual reference".

Frosch studied weaving and fiber arts at Philadelphia College of Art and at Cranbrook Academy. She continued to master the vocabulary of pattern and the mechanics of weaving in her work as a textile designer for the fashion houses of Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, and for the eminent textile firm Brunschwig et Fils. A New York City native, she now lives in Palisades, New York and Cushing, Maine.

Win Wilder Hall is proud to present the works of Richard Iammarino in a two-gallery show in conjunction with Asymmetric Arts. We humbly present a certain arc within Iammarino's astonishing breadth of accomplishment.

Iammarino is a virtuosic draftsman who's applied his skill to everything from surreal figurative work, to plein air landscape, to geometric abstractions. Over five decades of practice, he hasn't abandoned any facets of his art, but rather seems to cycle through these facets, reinforcing and intensifying his vision across different styles and media. For this show, both Win Wilder Hall and Asymmetric Arts will focus primarily on his extraordinarily refined abstract works.

At Win Wilder Hall, we will present an arc of Iammarino's work spanning through three key modes of work: The first works are finely rendered landscapes. In his extensive travels, Iammarino filled sketchbooks with keenly observed studies of rock formations, forest scenes, and shorelines. These studies fed more finished works: invented landscapes that are fictional, but still startling in their realism and detail. In the second theme presented, the convincing textures and compositions of his landscapes are abstracted into the impression of alien or otherworldly spaces. The third group consists of purely abstract drawings expressing a deeply observed understanding of form, drawn from disciplined observation, and catalyzed by early psychedelic experience. These works in this last category present a well-earned and airtight confidence of line and composition. Included in this group are smaller-scale studies for the dazzling large-scale oil paintings shown at Asymmetrick Arts.

Richard Iammarino is a multi-faceted artist who has applied his distinct vision to a dizzying array of media. He is accomplished in painting, drawing, printmaking, carving, casting, cartooning, mosaic, and mural-painting. After attending the Cleveland Institute of Art in the early 60's, he embraced a peripatetic lifestyle, traveling through western and eastern Europe, across north and west Africa, Brazil, India, and Bangladesh He settled in for a few months in one country, perhaps a year in another. Richard continued moving around, working and showing in San Francisco, Manhattan, Miami, Provincetown, Martha's Vineyard, Cambridge, Santa Fe, and Mexico City, with occasional forays back to India and Brazil. Last year, he established his home and studio in Rockland, Maine.

Win Wilder Hall was founded in 2011 by artists Joshua Cardoso and Ashley Seelig as a way to contribute a unique outside perspective to Rockland Maine's burgeoning contemporary art community. We are thrilled and honored to collaborate with Jared Cowan of Asymmetrick Arts, who deserves an enormous amount of credit for making contemporary art a visible and viable presence in Rockland.
