August 12 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting nights of the year for skywatchers. Several astronomical events are expected to overlap within a short time frame, creating a rare opportunity to witness multiple celestial phenomena in a single night.

One of the highlights is a six-planet alignment, where Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will all appear on the same side of the Sun from Earth’s perspective. While they won’t form a perfectly straight line, seeing so many planets in the sky at once is an uncommon and impressive sight. At the same time, the Moon will be in its new moon phase, leaving the sky much darker than usual and providing ideal conditions for observing faint objects.

Six Planets Will Gather in the Morning Sky on August 12, 2026.

On August 12, skywatchers will have an opportunity to see an impressive gathering of planets in the predawn sky. Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and Uranus will lie along the ecliptic—the apparent path the Sun follows across our sky—creating the appearance of a planetary alignment from Earth.

The planets are not actually forming a straight line through space. Their orbits are tilted at slightly different angles and they remain separated by enormous distances. From our perspective, however, their positions can make them appear arranged across the same region of the sky.

August 12 is an especially remarkable day for skywatchers because it also brings a total solar eclipse visible along a path stretching through Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain. The Perseid meteor shower also reaches its peak around the same time, adding another celestial event to an already extraordinary day.

The most striking planetary pairing that morning will be Venus and Jupiter, which will appear extremely close together in the sky—less than a degree apart. Venus will be the brightest object of the group, while Jupiter will also be easily noticeable before sunrise.
