Scarlett, a stray mother cat from Brooklyn, New York, became famous around the world in 1996 after risking her life to save her kittens from a burning garage.

As firefighters watched, the badly injured cat repeatedly ran back into the flames, carrying her kittens out one by one until all five were safe.

The fire left Scarlett with severe burns on her face, ears, and paws, and her eyes were damaged from the intense heat and smoke.

Despite her injuries, witnesses said she kept checking each kitten with her nose after every rescue attempt, making sure they were still alive before finally collapsing from exhaustion.

Scarlett later recovered with veterinary care and was adopted into a loving home along with her kittens.

Quokkas are famous online for looking like they’re constantly smiling, which is why people call them “the world’s happiest animal.”

Native to small parts of Western Australia, especially Rottnest Island, these tiny marsupials became internet celebrities because of their friendly expressions and curious behavior around humans.

But behind that cute image is a much harsher survival instinct. When threatened by predators, a mother quokka may eject her baby, called a joey, from her pouch while fleeing.

The joey’s movements and cries can distract the predator long enough for the mother to escape. It sounds cruel from a human perspective, but in the wild, survival often comes down to impossible choices.

The Greenland shark is officially the longest-living vertebrate on the planet. In 2016, a groundbreaking study published in the journal Science revealed just how ancient these mysterious deep-sea creatures can get.

By using radiocarbon dating on the crystalline proteins inside the eye lenses of a 16-foot female shark, researchers estimated her age to be roughly 392 years old, with a margin of error that means she could be anywhere from 272 to over 500 years old.

If the math holds up, she was swimming in the freezing depths of the Arctic during the reign of the Mughal Empire and long before the United States was even founded.

How do they live this long? It all comes down to the absolute slow lane. Greenland sharks live in near-freezing waters, giving them an incredibly sluggish metabolism.

They grow at a glacial pace of just about one centimeter per year and move through the water like slow-motion ghosts. In fact, they don't even reach sexual maturity until they are about 150 years old, meaning they spend what would be two full human lifetimes just waiting to grow up.
