Windows Workforce Training Program - Week 3 Update.

This week was a busy one! On Wednesday, the crew spent the morning learning about scoring and cutting glass. Then we were joined by Matt Smith of Unified Vision Studios to learn about repairing leaded glass windows.

Thursday morning, we started the day with Jim of Honeoye Falls Millwork and Liz of Valley Historic Windows at Jim's workshop. We learned about their repair processes, how new windows and their elements are built, and saw other cool projects Jim has worked on - including some column repairs he's working on.

The rest of the day was spent at our workshop working on the windows being restored as part of this training.

Opening night of Stage & Story: At the HeART of Preservation was unforgettable. From champagne and live piano in the newly renovated Floreano Room to stepping onto the historic West Herr RBTL stage, guests celebrated art, history, and preservation through music, costumes, food, and shared experiences.

As The Landmark Society looks ahead to its 90th anniversary in 2027, this evening was a meaningful reminder of what’s possible through community and preservation.

Windows Workforce Training Program: Week 2! 🪟🔨

Week 2 was packed with hands-on learning and new skills! Participants spent the week practicing essential window restoration techniques, including removing glazing and paint, sanding, and painting. We started on practice windows to build confidence and develop our skills before we moved on to real historic windows we will be repairing as part of the training program.

Beyond the hands-on work, we also explored the science behind the craft—learning about different wood species, how trees grow, and what characteristics make wood durable enough for long-lasting window windows. We also became familiar with the many specialized tools used in historic wood window restoration.

Every day brings new knowledge, new skills, and another step toward preserving our historic buildings for future generations. Stay tuned for more updates as the training continues!

Our Architecture on the Go walking tours are back! Join us on Wednesday evenings in June and Wednesday afternoons in July for these *FREE* guided architectural tours led by the one and only Tyler!

Our first tour takes place tomorrow, June 10th, in the historic Corn Hill neighborhood. Discover the architectural history of some of Rochester's most distinctive 19th-century homes during this fun, 45-minute walk.

Today marked the first day of our 2026 Windows Workforce Training Program!

Ten participants have begun six weeks of hands-on training with two of the best window restoration professionals in the business. They'll learn everything from tools and window components to removal, repair, restoration, installation, and even the important role historic preservation plays in strengthening our communities.

A special thank you to Angelo Ingrassia for providing an outstanding workshop space where participants can learn and practice their skills.

Today focused on classroom instruction, tool familiarization, and foundational knowledge. Starting tomorrow, participants will begin removing windows from a real building—windows that will be restored by our instructors and trainees over the course of the program.

We're excited to help build the next generation of skilled tradespeople while preserving the craftsmanship of the past.

The Landmark Society of Western New York extends its warmest wishes to all in celebration of National Pride Month this June. We proudly recognize and honor the histories, contributions, and enduring legacies of the LGBTQ+ community in Rochester and beyond.

Part of our mission is to preserve and bring greater awareness to all stories that have been erased, overlooked, or left unrecorded. As part of our ongoing commitment to preservation, we remain dedicated to documenting and uplifting the diverse stories that have shaped our shared cultural heritage. LGBTQ+ history is everyone’s history!

The Landmark Society’s Executive Director, Wayne Goodman, recently spoke at the ribbon cutting for the Harper’s Corner project in downtown Rochester. For many years, this corner has been a key preservation priority, making this milestone especially meaningful. The project demonstrates how historic preservation can serve as a catalyst for revitalization, investment, and community pride.
