We are saddened to share of another loss to the preservation community:

With the recent passing of Richard O. Reisem, our community has lost a passionate preservationist, gifted writer, and steadfast advocate for our shared architectural and cultural heritage. Richard devoted decades of his life to a wide range of preservation efforts and was a guiding force for The Landmark Society for many years, helping to shape its work and inspire those around him.

As an author, Richard possessed a remarkable command of language and an uncommon ability to translate the complexities of architecture, history, and preservation into narratives that were both engaging and accessible. His writing not only informed readers but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the places and stories that define our communities.

Richard's knowledge, generosity, and enduring commitment to preservation leave a lasting legacy in the buildings saved, the histories documented, and the countless people he inspired. He will be greatly missed.

Today we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Cynthia Howk, following a brief illness. For decades, Cynthia was at the heart of The Landmark Society’s mission, dedicating her knowledge, passion, and spirit to preservation. Her impact extended far beyond our organization, shaping preservation efforts across New York State and inspiring countless colleagues, advocates, property owners, and community leaders. The course of historic preservation in New York was forever changed by Cynthia’s work.

Cynthia’s legacy is reflected not only in the buildings and neighborhoods she helped protect, but in the people she mentored, encouraged, and inspired. She was a colleague, a friend, and an irreplaceable voice for preservation. We are profoundly grateful for the privilege of working alongside her and carrying forward the mission she loved so deeply. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Cynthia’s family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
