I’m thrilled to travel to Normandy, France in July to be a production crew member on a WWII documentary that will air on PBS, giving me my first professional film credit. 🎥 I am grateful to have been selected for the “International Filmmaking with WWII Documentarians” program, which is a collaboration between S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the WWII Foundation.

I will help with the World War II Foundation’s documentary about a Jewish-American soldier who was killed on D-Day and buried in a German grave for 80 years until his remains were found and brought to their rightful burial location in the Normandy American Cemetery. Some areas I will help with as a production crew member include shooting b-roll, preparing interviews, and working with historians.

I will also make my own independent project: a medical documentary on how artists with disabilities or medical conditions can still pursue art, and how their disability influences their perspective. I will be looking at it through the lens of famous French artist Claude Monet who had cataracts, which affected his artstyle. I am excited to visit Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny - one of the many locations the WWII Foundation is taking us to.

Thank you to Professor Shaina Holmes for selecting me for this program and for leading us on this trip. Thank you to WWII Foundation Founder, President, & Filmmaker Tim Gray, Director of Operations Sheila Gray, and Director of Photography Jim Karpeichik for this valuable opportunity. I am so excited to strengthen my filmmaking skills by learning from the team and to immerse myself in WWII history and French culture.

I am thankful for the 3 awards that will be funding my trip to Normandy: my study abroad scholarship as a Coronat Scholar, the Robert B. Menschel Public Service Award through the Shaw Center, and the Office of Student Success’s Summer Funding Award.

My career goal is to make medical documentaries and write medical articles as a doctor, so I am incredibly excited for this experience that will bring me a step closer to my goal.

This summer, I am a SOURCE Research Assistant in Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Xiaoran Hu’s lab in the Chemistry Department at Syracuse University. Thank you Dr. Hu for inviting me to work in your lab and giving me this opportunity. I am grateful to start gaining research experience on campus so early as a rising sophomore.

It has been exciting to deepen my chemistry knowledge, learn lab techniques like column chromatography, and learn how to use instruments from a rotary evaporator to a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer. I am thankful to have been awarded the SOURCE RA Award by the SOURCE at Syracuse University for this experience.

I am also a volunteer at Crouse Health in the Labor and Delivery (Post-Partum) department and St. Joseph’s Primary Care Center-West this summer.

I hope to become a neonatologist (doctor who cares for newborn and premature infants), so it has been very meaningful to me to be able to positively interact with mothers and their families in the NICU and the post-partum floor at Crouse, as well as kids at the Primary Care Center-West.

As a Biology and Journalism dual major and member of the BS/MD Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University, I am grateful for my summer of research and clinical volunteering that will prepare me for the future.

I am happy to share the second video I filmed and edited as a Video Intern for the Admissions Office for the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell School this semester.

I enjoyed interviewing Emerson Long, who graduated this year with majors in Geology and Physics and a French minor. Thank you Emerson for allowing me to highlight your story and experience as a student in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Thank you so much to A&S and Maxwell School Admissions and Enrollment Assistant Dean Christopher Anderson for inviting me to be an intern and giving me this great opportunity.

I am excited to produce more videos as an intern next semester at Syracuse University, and I look forward to the official video rollout sometime next school year.

I enjoyed reciting my poem “The Joy That They Locked Away” at the New York State Youth Poet Laureate Reading on May 27th at 8PM on zoom. My poem is inspired by the 2021 documentary “Summer of Soul” by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson about the Harlem Cultural Festival, which was a beautiful celebration of Black music, culture, and pride.

You can watch the video of my poetry reading and the Q&A session here or on my YouTube channel “OlaRose Ndubuisi”: https://youtu.be/0wTEbRj2_kw?si=2iSk0HpWN0nw8vbg

As the 2024-2025 New York State Youth Poet Laureate (NYS YPL), it was an honor to recite alongside such talented, passionate poets: 2023-2024 NYS YPL and 2024-2025 National YPL Stephanie Pacheco, 2025-2026 NYS YPL Vanessa Y. Niu, and the new 2026-2027 NYS YPL Hana Tsai. It was lovely to be able to help pass the torch down to Hana. With her beautiful poetry and vivid storytelling, I’m excited for her tenure.

Thank you so much to Ms. Asari Beale for inviting me to be a part of this beautiful event. The Executive Director of Teachers & Writers Collaborative, Ms. Asari Beale was the MC for the event and moderated the Q&A after we read our poetry. When I answered the question about what being a poetry ambassador means to me, it was great to reflect on how I’ve used poetry for personal self-reflection and also how my platform as the NYS YPL has allowed me to positively impact my community through poetry and advocacy. 📝❤️

I am happy to share the first video I made as a Video Intern for the Admissions Office for Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. As an intern, I interview student ambassadors about their academics, extracurriculars, and the support they’ve received from their college. I film b-roll and edit all the footage into 1.5 minute videos.

I enjoyed interviewing Kadiatou Bah, who graduated this year as a Policy Studies major and Information Management and Technology minor. Thank you Kadiatou for allowing me to highlight your story and experience as a student in Maxwell School.

Thank you so much to CAS & Maxwell School Admissions and Enrollment Assistant Dean Christopher Anderson for inviting me to be an intern and giving me this great opportunity.

A recap of an amazing second semester and end to my freshman year at Syracuse University as a dual major in Biology and Journalism and a member of the BS/MD Program with SUNY Upstate Medical University:

1. As a photographer and opinion writer for the Daily Orange, I wrote 3 pieces this semester and took 2 photo assignments, including photographing retired Professor Bill Coplin. At CitrusTV, I received Associate Producer credit for helping to write broadcast stories for Live at 6.

2. As a Video Intern for the Admissions Office for the Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences & Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, I created 1.5 min videos of interviews with student ambassadors and b-roll.

3. It was a pleasure to meet Mayor of Syracuse Sharon F. Owens and have a lovely conversation with her at the Student Government Association meeting in March.

4. As the New York State Youth Poet Laureate, I enjoyed reciting my poetry at Point of Contact’s Cruel April 2026 Poetry Reading, as well as leading a presentation, poetry reading, and writing and art workshop for the Disability Cultural Center.

5. I was honored to be 1 of 2 freshmen to receive the Newhouse School at Syracuse University First Year Achievement Award. I’m also grateful for my Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Finalist Award for my Daily Orange article and my “Audience Favorite Award” at the Salt City Film Festival for my documentary “From Service to Syracuse: The Veteran Behind the Wheel.”

6. I wrote and directed 2 short films this semester: rom-com short film “Only Fools Believe in Nice Guys” in February and drama short film “The Audience” in April.

7. At the Black History Month Career Mixer, I appreciated receiving motivating advice from alumni Entertainment Attorney, Producer, and Professor J. Christopher Hamilton as well as Journalist and Assignment Editor at CNY Central Mr. Jason Distant.

8. I’m grateful to God for the kind friends and warm community I’ve gained through Thursday Mass and Tuesday Bible Study at the Catholic Center.

9. At the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology conference in Denver, Colorado, I helped present Retinopathy of Prematurity research that I contributed to as a co-author.

Thank you to everyone who made my freshman year memorable. I’m excited to share my summer plans soon.

I enjoyed taking graduation photos of Nasir Adams - a graduating senior student-athlete on the Track and Field team, majoring in Forensic Science and Chemistry at Syracuse University. He is also a Coronat Scholar and a Kessler Scholar. 🎉

Congratulations, Nasir! Thank you for allowing me to help you capture this special moment. 📷

I’m happy to share that I earned a 4.0 GPA for my second semester (Spring) of my freshman year at Syracuse University, maintaining a 4.0 GPA for the entire year.

I’m proud of myself for balancing my dual majors in Biology in Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences and Journalism in Newhouse School at Syracuse University with many extracurriculars, speaking engagements as the 2024-2025 New York State Youth Poet Laureate, and a trip to Colorado to present research at the ARVO conference, while spending time with my family and friends.

In CHE 116 and CHE 117, I enjoyed building upon my knowledge and skills in chemistry from last semester. In JNL 211, I learned AP style and the differences between text and broadcast journalism. I applied my skills by completing a reaction story, event coverage story, and a profile piece.

In the Honors Section of MAX 123, I wrote essays and participated in thoughtful discussions with my classmates on the loneliness epidemic, and how we can help. In BIO 224, I delivered 2 group presentations summarizing research abstracts in addition to doing various experiments.

Thank you to my mom - Dr. Olachi Joy Mezu-Ndubuisi, my family, friends, and my professors for their kind support of me throughout the year, allowing me to have a great transition to college.
