The tradition of throwing graduation caps in the air began in 1912 at the U.S. Naval Academy, where midshipmen received their new officer hats, and threw their old ones into the air to celebrate the promotion. The term Pentecost comes from the Greek πεντηκοστή (pentēkostē) meaning fiftieth and refers to the festival of Shavuot, which is celebrated 50 days after Passover.
