If you come to Artist Row at the Rochester Public Market this Sunday, 9/20, look up! Our art and the art of four other artists are on street banners around the market. The nine different banner designs include three works from Studio Michaelino.

Artist Row is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This year you'll find Studio Michaelino in a new location in booths A18 and A20. And there are booths from 200 other artists to check out.

Strange Weather for Art. Sunday was drizzly, cold, and windy. In other words, the opposite of the conditions we prefer for making art. And we are very busy getting ready for a show. But I had a growing inspiration. Make that an obsession. The muse said: "You Must!” We did. Thankfully, we had several patio umbrellas to block the rain and wind.

Coming Soon: “The Dark Side of the Sun.” Dark, stark, and beautiful. We must wait until later to examine the hundreds of photos taken during Sunday's session, but still…Soon.

Next week, Studio Michaelino will bring its Art of Organic Collage to the Clothesline Art Festival for the seventh time....

Next week, Studio Michaelino will bring its Art of Organic Collage to the Clothesline Art Festival for the seventh time. The M&T Bank Clothesline Art & Fine Craft Festival takes place at the Memorial Art Gallery () on August 29 & 30. Note that these dates are earlier than in previous years due to the lateness of Labor Day.

Clothesline has been Rochester’s biggest celebration of the arts for nearly 70 years. This year’s festival will feature over 300 artists, live music, food trucks, and museum access.

We will be in our usual location: Booth 074, Zone B. Hope to see you there!

The twelfth and final organic collage within our twelve-part review of Marcia’s landscape-oriented artworks is “August in Vermont.” Composed the day after our return from Stowe, Vermont in 2022, this organic collage had not been released until now. (Unfortunately, there will be no August in Vermont for us this year.)

Last week, as we finished formatting her Petal Painting, Marcia decided that she liked two different crops, one being wider than the other. So, we will print both.

Marcia’s whimsical details feature two unusual vegetables: Eggplant “Thai Green Frog Fingers” and immature fruit of Okra “Nkruma Tenten”, which originated in Ghana. We love both varieties for use in art and the kitchen, although growing enough of the miniature eggplant is a challenge. See the third slide for a close-up view of these curious little vegetables.

The eleventh organic collage within our twelve-part review of Marcia’s landscape-oriented artworks is “Fantasy with Rolling Hills.” Marcia’s was composed in early November 2022, at the very end of what we refer to as “Harvest Season for Art.” The palette here, featuring petals from some of her favorite dahlias, connects with Marcia’s first published works from five years before.

As often happens, this lovely creation stayed in our archives for nearly a year before we completed working on selecting, cropping and needed exposure adjustments. That is not unusual; we still have dozens of other unfinished works from 2016 to 2026 waiting for our final evaluation. The creation of our art is seasonal. When there is art to be made, we work at a pace that does not always provide time to finish the final image, only to take the photographs and move on to the next day’s harvest.

In October of 2022, Marcia and I were preparing for our upcoming show “Messages from the Urban Garden.” We spent a couple of days deciding which works were to be in the show and now felt our list was (finally!) complete. Or so we thought. To unwind after the discussion, Marcia went out in the garden to “play” around. A few hours later she had completed the shimmering “Tomorrow’s Dawn.” While photographing her results, we both realized that this new work had to be included in the show. And so, “Tomorrow’s Dawn” is the tenth organic collage within our twelve-part review of her landscape-oriented artworks.

Why is this work named for a future event? Here is what I wrote at the time about this composition as well as how we interpret our work in general:

“Many of our photographs are homegrown fantasies meant to convey ‘Joyous Desperation.’ Our joy is centered on the potential, sustainable future of a well-managed ecotopia. The circle of life within the urban garden is symbolic of green and good possibilities. But with our planet at risk of a climate disaster, our desperation resides in the counterpoint to the beauty we capture: the intractable status quo of denial.

So, view the messages of our art as being sent back from a sustainable future for which we desperately long: a future where the diverse needs for earth justice have become reality. May ‘Tomorrow’s Dawn’ bring that future closer for all. “

Marcia’s “Rubinato” is the ninth organic collage within our twelve-part review of her landscape-oriented artworks.

From Marcia: ”This fantastical scene includes one of my favorite new flowers: Cosmos ‘Rubinato.’ I love the velvety petals in gorgeous shades of Burgundy, Magenta, and Old Rose.
Clouds of Garlic Chive flowers float on a blue background made from leaves of Broccoli ‘Piracicaba.’ Completing my Fantasy Sky and Sun are varieties of # Calendulas that replanted themselves. Along with Cosmos ‘Rubinato’, the landscape includes Cosmos ‘Double Take’, Nasturtium leaves, Lamb’s Ear, Flowers from Hostas, Hydrangea and Basil, and a mystery Variegated Ferny Leaf.”
Assembled in August 2021, nearly a year later, on July 31, 2022, “Rubinato” was shown nationwide on CBS Sunday Morning. Marcia’s artwork appeared at the end of a story about the annual wildflower festival that takes place in Crested Butte, Colorado. Thirteen different Studio Michaelino works have been broadcast on Sunday Morning over the last nine years on a running total of twenty-three occasions.
