Look at the shirt you're wearing right now. Is it knit or woven? The answer changes soooo much about how it behaves 👀
Woven fabric is made on a loom by interlacing two sets of threads at right angles, the warp (running lengthwise) and the weft (running crosswise). Think denim, canvas, linen, most dress shirts, and tweed. Woven fabrics are generally stable and don't stretch much.
Knit fabric is made from a single continuous yarn looped through itself in interlocking rows, the same basic structure as hand-knitting, just done with tiny threads. This becomes jersey T-shirts, sweaters, leggings, and most athletic wear. Knit fabrics stretch and recover, which is why they're comfortable against the body.
You can usually tell the difference by gently pulling the fabric sideways. Wovens resist while knits give!
Most of what's taught at the Weaving and Fiber Arts Center starts at the loom, which means woven fabric, with all its variations: twill, tapestry, lace, doubleweave, and more. But that doesn't mean we aren't knitters too - and we have a few classes in that world as well! Fiber is fiber and we love it all ❤️
