Image City Photography Gallery is proud to present Black Is Beautiful, an exhibition of fine art portraiture by Rochester photographer and creative director Adam Eaton, opening September 8, and continuing through October 6, 2026.

Adam Eaton is a Rochester, NY-based Fine Art Photographer and Creative Director working in studio portraiture. Using flash and strobe lighting, he creates images that are deliberate, timeless, and emotionally grounded.

His work centers on celebrating the beauty of Black people and honoring the community that shaped him. Guided by four values, Community, Honesty, Love, and Beauty, Eaton approaches each portrait as both a personal practice and a cultural statement. His images hold emotional truth, reflect lived experience, and create space for conversation around identity, race, and the quiet complexities many people carry.

Congratulations for a Runner-up award to Susan Lander whose photograph, ”Blue Heron” moves beyond a traditional wildlife image, transforming the blue heron’s flight into an expressive study of motion, light, and color. A slower shutter speed allows the wings, body, and trailing feet to blur gracefully while retaining enough detail in the head, neck, and beak to keep the bird recognizable. Panning creates a softly streaked background that conveys speed and separates the luminous heron from its surroundings.
Warm sunlight catches the feathers, revealing delicate shades of gold, blue, lavender, and rose that give the image a painterly quality. The extended neck creates a strong horizontal line, while the wings, legs, and trails of water add energetic diagonals. Most importantly, the photograph captures more than the heron’s appearance—it conveys the sensation and graceful power of flight, making it a memorable runner-up selection.

Tom Kredo’s Mud Rugby, runner-up in the current Photographers’ Journey 2026 exhibition, captures the intensity of competition at precisely the right moment. The tightly cropped composition places the viewer directly inside the struggle, where intertwined arms, hands, and bodies communicate the force and physicality of the sport. The players’ strained expressions reveal determination, exhaustion, and concentration, transforming the photograph into a compelling human story.
The two visible faces provide strong emotional anchors, while the central player’s body creates a powerful vertical form between them. Hands gripping clothing and legs lead the eye throughout the frame, reinforcing the sense of movement and conflict. Congratulations to Shawn Murphy, Grand Prize winner for “Liquid Light” in the current Photographers’ Journey 2026 exhibition at Image City Photography Gallery. His captivating photograph offers a glimpse into the hidden world beneath Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where freshwater flows through ancient limestone caves and sunlight penetrates openings in the earth.
The composition draws the eye from the glowing opening above, through the suspended divers, to the illuminated cavern floor. The surrounding darkness intensifies the brilliant blue light and creates a mood that is both mysterious and serene. Liquid Light captures not simply an extraordinary place, but the wonder and discovery of experiencing it.

There is something wonderfully unexpected about Zachary Scott’s Gallery Pick, “Sleeping Bear.” Zachary allows the immense landscape to become part of the story. The sleeping bear appears almost small against the sweeping tidal flat and distant snow-covered mountains, creating a striking sense of scale and solitude. The warm brown of the bear immediately draws our eye, yet the vast landscape reminds us that it is only one small part of a much larger wilderness. “Sleeping Bear” captures a rare moment of stillness while leaving us wondering about the story that came before–––and the one that will follow.
