🇮🇹 Why Was Columbus Day Established? 🇮🇹

Many people know Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage, but fewer know the important role the holiday played in Italian American history.

In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed the first national Columbus Day observance on the 400th anniversary of Columbus's journey. The proclamation came just one year after the tragic 1891 New Orleans lynchings, in which eleven Italian immigrants were killed amid widespread anti-Italian prejudice.

The observance was intended not only to mark a historic voyage but also to help ease tensions with Italy, combat anti-Italian sentiment, and recognize the growing contributions of Italian immigrants and Catholic communities in the United States.

For generations of Italian Americans, Columbus Day became a symbol of acceptance, pride, and recognition in a country where many early immigrants faced discrimination and hardship.

Today, the Italian American Community Center honors the resilience, perseverance, culture, and contributions of Italian Americans who helped build our communities and enrich our nation.

🇮🇹 Happy Columbus Day! May we continue to celebrate our heritage, our families, and the generations who came before us.
