Instructor Spotlight..... Ryan Haynes

Ryan is a multi-instrumentalist and award-winning elementary music teacher in Austin. Originally from Ames, Iowa, he started playing piano when he was four, and has been teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, and brass for over twenty years. Ryan earned his Bachelor of Music degree with Honors in Music Education from the University of Iowa and a Master of Music in Ethnomusicology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has played in countless bands and ensembles of many varieties, including punk, rock, jazz, classical, salsa, Balkan, Andean pan flute, and Zimbabwean mbira, and he continues to write and perform on his own.

Having taught students from ages 4 to 50 for over two decades, Ryan's priority with any student is forging a strong relationship in order to foster their love of music, so that they enjoy coming to lessons, want to work hard, and trust that he is their cheerleader. Crafting instruction to match a student's learning style and what motivates them, he also believes that good teaching is about inquiry, exploration, and dialogue. As a student of the Suzuki Method, Ryan continues to use this as an instructional foundation, training a student's ears (much like when a child learns language) as much as their hands, eyes, and brain.

Ryan received a Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching Research to travel to Colombia in the fall to work with Fundacion Batuta - a nationalized system of music education created in the 1990s after the country's civil war as an effort to teach community building and reconciliation, and his project will focus on elementary music education and social-emotional learning.
