Three chances to catch "These Shining Lives" this weekend.

Written by Melanie Marnich and directed by Shawnda Urie, "These Shining Lives," is based on the true story of the "Radium Girls," women who worked at the Radium Dial Company in the 1920s and 30s, painting watch dials with radium-based paint. The play chronicles their lives, their radiation poisoning, and their fight for justice. "These Shining Lives" is the story of resilience, friendship, and the fight for dignity in the face of corporate greed.

JCC CenterStage presents the world premier of a new musical, THE SOUND. The show opens this Saturday and runs May 2-17. See below for tickets and more info.

In 1943, deportation orders of over 7,000 Danish Jews inspired their friends and neighbors to help them escape to Sweden across The Sound, sending ripples far beyond the waters that transported them to safety. Set in both past and present, this magical and heroic story of one family’s race against the clock to elude capture may restore your faith in humanity.

🎟 Be among the first to see this world premiere, and help kickstart its journey through Rochester and beyond! We open Saturday!

Our spring 2026 main stage production "These Shining Lives" is a true story.

Playwright Melanie Marnich originally published the script in 2010 using the real names and real trial to tell the story of 'The Radium Girls'.

For more detail about this dark time in American history we recommend "The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women" by Kate Moore (published 2017).

With meticulous research and a keen eye for detail, Kate Moore delves into the lives of these remarkable individuals, capturing their resilience, strength, and unwavering determination. Through their stories, she exposes the shocking negligence and corporate cover-ups that plagued the radium industry, ultimately sparking a revolution in workplace safety.

The Radium Girls is a masterful blend of historical account and heartfelt tribute. Moore's vivid prose brings these forgotten heroines back to life, ensuring that their sacrifices and triumphs are forever etched in our collective memory. As you turn each page, you'll be captivated by their indelible legacy and inspired by their enduring spirit.

"These Shining Lives" is directed by Shawnda Urie.
