Memory care is where this work gets quiet and enormous at the same time. A resident who has not spoken in weeks will put a hand on a dog's head and say its name. Someone who cannot recall breakfast will tell you, in full detail, about a collie she had in 1961. Staff step out of the nurses' station just to watch. We do not measure these visits in minutes. We measure them in the moment a face changes. Our teams serve memory care units across the Rochester region every week, and every one of those visits is somebody's grandmother.

Ask the person first, every time, and accept no as an answer without needing a reason. Then let the dog come to you rather than reaching over its head — a hand descending from above is the single most common way friendly greetings go wrong. Turn slightly sideways, keep your hand low, and let the dog close the last few feet. If it does not, it has answered you. Scratch the chest or shoulder, not the top of the skull. Teach this to your kids and you will have given them something they will use for the rest of their lives.
