Founded in 1952, The Zoo is an unique outdoor family friendly destination located on top of Mill Mountain that offers 360-degree views of the Roanoke Valley. Guests can experience animals in an environment similar to their na

tive habitat and learn about our conservation efforts with endangered, vulnerable and threatened species around the world. Mill Mountain Zoo provides refuge to animals that are non-releasable due to injury, captive birth, and owner-relinquishment. For community members that cannot come to the Zoo, we provide educational outreach programs at schools, retirement communities and libraries. As a Zoological Association of America (ZAA) accredited and esteemed facility, we take pride in the superior level of care given to the animals in our guardianship.

We have SO much to be thankful for this summer that we couldn’t possibly make a post for every special moment! 💚

🧔 What do these critters have in common? 🧔

Did you know that all of our goats are female… except for one? Meet Fu, our brown Myotonic Goat! Fu is a mom, but she also has one of the best beards around. 🐐🧔

And here’s the fun part: goat beards aren’t gender-specific! Both male and female goats can grow beards, depending on the breed.

But Fu isn’t the only one with a beard! Bearded dragons, like our Norbert, got their name from the way they can puff out the skin around their throat when they feel threatened. They can also darken this area, making it look like they have a big, black beard! 🦎🧔

So, what do these critters have in common?

They’re all rocking some seriously impressive beards! 😂

We are SO happy that so many of you came out to join us for Amanda Panda’s August Reading Adventure! Thank you to everyone who participated, listened to stories, and helped make each week so much fun!

And a HUGE thank you to Roanoke Public Libraries for partnering with us for the third year of Reading with Amanda Panda! 📖 We love getting to share our love of reading, learning, and animals with our community, and we couldn’t do it without you!

We hope you had as much fun as Amanda Panda did! We can’t wait to see you again for more adventures!🎍📚

Mill Mountain Zoo's red-ruffed lemurs would like to say happy September 1st.

Red-ruffed lemurs are a critically endangered species. We have two here, male and female named Sam and Lucy. As an endangered species, they are ambassadors for their species survival plan.

🐺❤️ Happy International Wolf Day! ❤️🐺

Today, we celebrate wolves of all species and the important role they play in ecosystems around the world.

From the gray wolf and Arctic wolf to the Ethiopian wolf and our own critically endangered red wolves, wolves are intelligent, social, highly adaptable animals that have captured our imagination for generations.

At Mill Mountain Zoo, we're especially proud to introduce our guests to Cary and Rocket, our resident red wolves. Their story gives us an opportunity to talk about the challenges facing wolves and the importance of conservation.

🌎 Wolves help keep ecosystems healthy.
🐾 They are highly social and intelligent animals.
❤️ Many wolf species face serious conservation challenges.
🐺 Protecting wolves means protecting the ecosystems they call home.

Today, we're celebrating all wolves — from the smallest and most specialized species to the iconic gray wolf — and the people around the world working to ensure these incredible animals have a future.
