Radium Girls - Showtimers Community Theatre
May 9, 2024

Showtimers has done it again! Director Jamie Stewart is known in the area for coaxing personal experiences out of ensemble pieces, and "Radium Girls" by D.W. Gregory - the powerful true story of Grace Fryer's fight for justice against her employer - shines through her creative vision.

Amanda Johnson, Victoria Ferris, and Kelly Mangum open the show as bright young dial painters at the US Radium Corporation. These three actors bring a sense of innocence and youth to the show, and Johnson in particular shows us Grace Fryer's loss of that same innocence as she becomes ill and her friends die from the effects of the "miracle radium" they use daily.

Kelly Anglim stands out as the formidable yet gentle Katherine Wiley who, paired with Barry Bedwell as compassionate and caring lawyer Raymond Berry, brings a sense of humanity to the fight against "big radium." They are contrasted by Corey Stewart's very convincing portrayal of the slimeball Edward Markley. Caught in the mix is Jim Mone's Arthur Roeder - a man who wants to do right by others AND his company. This inner turmoil is a timeless story, but feels so fresh and delicate in Mone's hands.

Through the use of double casting, Stewart features actor Elliot Raff as both the sweet, loving Tommy Krieder and the self-preserving, company man Charlie Lee. Raff's ability to take the audience from a place of empathy with Tommy to incredulity and frustration with Charlie is phenomenal. The rest of the ensemble also play more than one character, some with great accents and physical changes.

The simple set design, minimal props and costumes, and careful use of lighting and sound center the story - all of the designers should be commended for their homogenous approach to what could be chaos in less capable hands. But the most amazing technical choice is that see everything. From the gracefully choreographed stage crew to the awkward, icky glow of white clothing under blacklight, J. Stewart chose to keep the show transparent. Too bad the same can't be said for the US Radium Corp.

Romeo & Juliet - Southwest Virginia Ballet
April 13, 2024

Sitting in the seats before a ballet will always bring nostalgic excitement and nervous energy for this writer. Growing up, I was lucky enough to attend several ballets as the child of a former prima ballerina. Knowing the hard work, exceptional energy, and stage fright that went into this production made the anticipation even sweeter as the first strains of Prokofiev’s beautiful score filled the Berglund Center’s Performing Arts Theatre.

The thing about ballet is that the bodies of the dancers tell the story. Erin Schallon as Juliet, Tess Post as the Nurse, and Kevin Perry as Mercutio carried the heaviest burdens of storytelling, not dissimilar to Shakespeare’s script. These three were in turn fun, funny, and ultimately heart-rending in their portrayal of the rollercoaster of emotion that sheer talent alone (and there were BUCKETS of talent on that stage!) could not convey. Each dancer in turn showed their skill, but these three told a beautiful story. Not to be outdone, however, Lachlan Robrecht’s Romeo had his own moments of joy, anger, terror, and tragedy. Tyrique Bowles gave us a stilted and almost emotionless Tybalt who seemed to only blossom under the watchful, and sometimes romantic, eye of his aunt, the Lady Montague (Grace Frank Rempel). Will Vaughn rounded out the cast as a young, tag along cousin Benvolio. His interactions with Perry and Robrecht really made for a believable, mischievous young trio.

Szalay’s choreography sat just right with this story about young people told by young dancers. The ballroom scene wherein Juliet meets her Romeo featured adults in masks towering over the younger featured dancers. This brought to life the fact that these young people lived a life separate from the one the adults would have for them. The lighting and scenery perfectly framed the scenes so that the dancers were the focal point of the story, yet they weren’t so simple that the audience was bored.

Overall, this evening at the ballet was enjoyable and quite entertaining. We can’t wait to see what SVB does next!
