🎻 Artist Update – Welcome

Sometimes plans shift—and beautiful new possibilities open. We’ll miss Thapelo Masita's artistry and presence, and we’re deeply grateful to Kyle for stepping in with such grace.

We’re thrilled to welcome Kyle Victor, cellist, to Songs of Love and Exile! Kyle brings deep sensitivity, warmth, and expressive range to everything he plays. His presence is already adding something very special to this program, and I can’t wait for you to hear him. His personal story is also very touching- watch it here. https://abc7ny.com/houston-teen-accepted-into-top-of-the-5-best-music-colleges-cello-player-musician/3398585/

May is both Chamber Music Month and Mental Health Awareness Month—an especially poignant pairing as we prepare to perform Schumann’s Dichterliebe (The Poet in Love) Song Cycle.

Schumann’s life was marked by brilliance and deep inner struggle. He spent his final years in a mental institution, and it’s haunting to perform the song referencing the Rhine and the Cathedral of Cologne—knowing he would later throw himself into that very river.

I’ve been yearning to play Dichterliebe for years, and it feels especially meaningful to perform it in the month Schumann composed it. It took him a mere week to write the entire cycle of 16 songs. I've been soaking my soul in its beauty, its symbolism, its psychological and emotional depth. The piano has a special role of not only a partner, but a commentator, often having the last word. It has been very fulfilling to work on the cycle and I look forward to bringing it to you alongside the stunning voice of Sun Young Chang!

Here is a stunning recording of the legendary Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Vladimir Horowitz—a rare, intimate glimpse into two giants breathing life into Dichterliebe
