Four projects. Ten years. One very special school. šŸ’™

Our relationship with Hilltop School in Mendham has grown over the years, and this summer we had the opportunity to return once again, this time to transform the ceiling of the Media Center.

Our first Hilltop mural dates back to 2016, when students helped create a mural celebrating the history of Mendham. We returned in 2018, then again in 2023 to transform the library hallway with books, birds, clouds, student handprints, and uplifting messages.

And now, in 2026, we’re looking up.

There’s something incredibly meaningful about being invited back to the same school again and again. You get to see how the artwork becomes part of the life of the school.

Thank you, Hilltop, for continuing to make room for art!

If you’ve driven through Bernardsville, chances are you’ve seen this mural. šŸš—šŸŽØ

But what you see from the road is only part of the story.
The Welcome to Bernardsville project was a two-year community-wide effort involving hundreds of local residents, students, businesses, nonprofits, and town leaders.

Together, we transformed both sides of the NJ Transit railway overpass on Mt. Airy Road into a colorful welcome to the borough.

The project involved public brainstorming sessions, collaboration with Bernardsville High School Advanced Art students, community painting days, studio work, and then of course, the installation process.

And because this is a major traffic corridor, the mural had to do something very specific: tell the story of Bernardsville clearly and beautifully in just a few seconds as people pass by.

Pictured are some of the behind the scenes of this project, and just a few of the people who helped bring this mural to fruition!

Greetings from Newton, New Jersey! šŸ‘‹šŸŽØ
This 63’ x 14’ mural on Spring Street was a true community project.

Titled ā€œGreetings from Newton, New Jerseyā€, the mural brings together some of the places that make Newton recognizable.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of the project was the people.

More than 100 volunteers of all ages helped bring the mural to life. What began with a community vision became something the whole town could literally leave its mark on.

That’s what I love about public art: it doesn’t just decorate a town. It can help tell the story of the people who live there.

Hillcrest Elementary in Somerset, NJ: This mural brings a little bit of the Eagle Warrior spirit to life, with Eddie the Eagle taking center stage alongside Hillcrest’s school, students, sports, gardens, and plenty of details that make this community unique.

From the first sketches to the finished wall, it was exciting to watch the vision come together. Now students have a colorful reminder of their school pride waiting for them every day. And of course a reminder that ā€œAt Hillcrest, we don’t just fly, we soar high!ā€

The school year has begun, and students have finally gotten to see their new media center at Hilltop Elementary School in Mendham!
This summer, we transformed the ceiling of Hilltop Elementary School’s library and media center in Mendham, NJ into a colorful new piece of artwork designed specifically for the space.
There’s something especially fun about a mural on a ceiling. You don’t necessarily expect to find artwork there, and then suddenly you look up and the whole room feels different.
This project was a little different from our large collaborative school residencies, but it had the same goal at heart: to create a space that feels welcoming, imaginative, and special for the students who use it every day.
What do you think…should we be painting more ceilings? šŸ˜‰

A look back at a project from 2021 at the Bernardsville Mt Airy Train Overpass! I drive by this mural often and remember the fun we had with the community to bring this one to fruition. Working alongside town officials, we spent time getting the details right with input from the Bernardsville residents. The result has become a real piece of civic pride.
Thank you, Bernardsville, for trusting us with this wall!

Such a fun project from earlier this year: the mural we completed at Woodland Elementary School in Morristown.

From the first design conversations to the final brushstroke, this project was shaped by the Woodland community. Congratulations, Woodland, on the sweetest whimsical storybook wall that will greet students for years to come!

Here are some of my favorite details, and a peek behind the process from our recent project at Burnet Hill School. This mural came together through close work with teachers, students, and the PTO, all with one goal: a hallway that feels like it belongs to the kids who walk it every day.
Seeing the reactions on installation day, and the pride the kids felt when they found the details they helped paint, is one of the best parts of this job. It’s a reminder of why school murals matter beyond decoration, they shape how students feel about the space they spend their days in.

A recent install at Heritage Middle School in Livingston, NJ. The students did an awesome job working on this one. I love adding details into mural designs that students can discover each time they walk by. Swipe through and let me know which details catch your eye!

Feeling incredibly honored to receive this Recognition Award for Service from the Morris School District, Presented by Principal Christopher Miller of Normandy Park School, in June!

Over the past 10 years Olmsted Mural Group has created several murals in schools throughout the district. Some of the schools I’ve had the pleasure of painting in this district include Frelinghuysen Middle School, Alexander Hamilton Elementary, Normandy Park School, and Woodland Elementary school, and Sussex Avenue School.

Creating murals for schools is an incredibly rewarding aspect of this job. I love knowing these murals inspire creativity, curiosity, and a sense of belonging for the students who walk past them each day.

A heartfelt thank you to the administrators, teachers, students, and everyone who has trusted me to help bring color and storytelling into your schools. Here's to many more walls transformed into places of inspiration!
