A quick lesson about autoimmune diseases. It takes an average of 3 years and 5 doctors for a person to get a proper diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. I just wish more people understood what an autoimmune disease is. It is not a cold or the flu and you will never get better. A nap doesn't help the sometimes debilitating chronic fatigue that leaves you feeling as though your entire body is shutting down. Sleeping 10 hours doesn’t leave you well rested, ever. Just eating a salad and hitting the gym won’t slim your face or get the pounds off. Brain fog will cloud your head and make it impossible to form coherent sentences, think of common words and kill your short-term memory.

There are last minute changes in plans because that “just got ran over” feeling never makes appointments and it just walks in whenever you aren’t ready. Chronic widespread pain, achy joints and bones, dry skin, breaking hair, pain in your scalp from even moving your hair (it feels like my hair hurts), mood swings, anxiety and depression are just the tip of the iceberg. You are also prone to having multiple autoimmune diseases which presents new challenges and symptoms.

The “put together on the outside”, rarely matches the raging battle on the inside. You struggle with how the autoimmune disease is affecting your organs and mental health and often struggle with coping due to the many changes in your new lifestyle you can’t control.
