Racing’s North Turn

This beachfront bar & grill sits at the north end of the old Daytona Beach and Road Course. From the formation of NASCAR in 1948 through 1958, the sanctioning body held races on 4.1 mile asphalt/sand long oval. Cars would race down A1A for 2 miles before turning onto the beach to race 2 miles north on the sand. The 1953 race saw 136 cars enter the field. In 1959, NASCAR moved racing to the new Superspeedway a few miles inland. Motor cycle racing continued on the course for two more years until 1960 when it was permanently closed for racing.

Streamline Hotel - The Birthplace of NASCAR.

Opened in 1941, one block from the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona Beach, the Streamline Hotel held the first meetings for what would come to be called NASCAR. On December 14, 1947, Bill France Sr. called prominent racers and promoters together. After several weeks, the sanctioning body was officially formed on February 21, 1948.
