The best way to get a more consistent and functional turn?
•Train how it finishes•
1) Train finishing pirouettes in retiré at the barre. This does not have to be how they are introduced, but should be practiced regularly.
2) Teach parallel pirouettes finishing with feet together on demi pointe. This allows flexibility to integrate turns into different combinations of movement, and eliminates the problem of only being able to finish in second position or by stepping out.
3) Teach turned out pirouettes from fifth position, finishing in sous-sus. The same rationale as above applies, but beginning in fifth position makes it easier for the beginner to also finish with their weight centered.
4) Choreograph pirouettes to end in a variety of positions. Versatility is technique's best friend!
