I think the scariest thing about my upcoming hip joint replacement surgery isn't the procedure... it's the loss of income while I'm on leave from work.

Substitute teachers can't participate in CT Family Leave Act.

We don't get sick days at all.

I'm also a small business owner but haven't paid into the system long enough yet to qualify for benefits.

FMLA protects my job, so I can't be fired and then go on unemployment. Also can't get unemployment payments unless I'm able-bodied and employable.

We are going to bleed money every day I'm in recovery. Goal is to get back to work ASAP.
