“Meet Me At The Chapel” by Kimani Johnson Kimani has been a centerpiece of our Loving Ourselves Into Existence exhibition. Today’s the final day to view the show, and we simply can’t close out without highlighting this piece!

This piece generated a lot of attention and conversation. At first, it draws you in because, yes “TITTIES”! But upon further interaction and reflection, you discover the layers of depth and meaning. Using the traditional Cathedral Window quilt pattern and drawing on the history of wedding quilts, Johnson reflects on same-gender marriage, the relatively recent laws recognizing it, and the ways love, commitment, and family are shaped by politics and public debate.

The responses to this exhibition reminded us that there is still plenty of work to do. As the show comes to a close, we invite you to keep following, supporting, collecting, and making space for the artists who trusted us with their work and stories.

A Late-Summer Reset at Chromophore

It’s been 18 months since Chromophore opened its doors, and this feels like a good inflection point to pause, assess, and reset.

For the rest of August and first few days of September, gallery hours will be primarily by appointment while I make space to focus on my own artistic practice, prepare for Rich Blue Hues, and plan programming, partnerships, and resources for the remainder of the year.

Part of getting back to my practice means I’ll still be working and creating in the gallery, just at my own pace and on my own hours. So if the shades are up and the lights are on, feel free to stop in.

Chromophore is simply shifting gears for a bit, making space to create, reflect, plan, and prepare for what’s next.
