Gallery5 is a 501(c)3 Non-profit Organization that facilitates and inspires creativity while preserving and celebrating Richmond history. G5 is an award-winning, community-motivated visual and performing art center and museum

that has become a premier arts venue for local and regional audiences. Through extensive collaboration with cultural, educational, environmental and social organizations, we continue to broaden demographics by encouraging a more diverse, inclusive, and inspired region of art supporters. We showcase forward thinking contemporary art exhibitions in our historic space and museum that are designed to further innovation in our region and encourage dialogue among artists and audiences. Our exhibitions range from themed solo or group shows, international notables, local favorites and emerging unknowns whose works deserve more public exposure. Through the development of annual fundraisers, exhibitions and unique marketing campaigns, we utilize artistic talents to inspire positive social and economic change and awareness. Gallery5 is one of the top venues in the region for unconventional and progressive performance art series and is host to weekly visiting arts groups. These performances consist of local and nationally known artists in areas of improvisation comedy, spoken word, film, live music, contemporary dance and theater. With your support we continue to be a catalyst for new creative initiatives, and serve as a launching pad for emerging artists and area non-profits. We exist to preserve and make available our historic building as a museum and to provide our community with a space to share their innovations and to engage others. History:
Gallery5 is located in Richmond, Virginia’s, Historic Jackson Ward district. The Gallery opened its doors on April 15, 2005 as a museum, art, and performance space in an effort to save the life of a National Historic Landmark known as Steamer Company No. 5. Built in 1849, Steamer Company No. 5, is Virginia’s oldest firehouse and Richmond’s oldest police station and jailhouse. This landmark has survived threats of demolition by the City of Richmond for over 3 decades. Without the dedication of volunteers over the past 35 years, an important piece of our city’s history would have been lost. The downtown arts community has grown exponentially since Gallery5 became an anchor destination, attracting other museums, galleries and businesses to the area. Gallery5 is very proud of its contribution to the revitalization of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, and to the many artists and arts organizations that call the area home. Gallery5 is paving the way for positive community change through numerous campaigns, educational workshops, public arts collectives and grassroot collaborations. Gallery5 has received many notable recognitions and awards over the years. Some of our awards include:
- “Arts Innovator of the Year” 2008 Theresa Pollock Award for Excellence in the Arts
-”Best Underground Venue for Music and Arts” Style Weekly’s 2011 Best of Richmond Awards
“Best Gallery in which to see Richmond Artists” Richmond Magazine’s 2011 Best & Worst of Richmond
-“Best Art Gallery” in Richmond Magazine’s 2007 Best & Worst of Richmond Awards.
-“Rising Star” Finalist in the Virginian’s for the Arts: Art’s Builds Community Awards.

🥒 CALL FOR ARTISTS + PICKLE MAKERS 🥒

Artists, makers, fermenters, and devoted pickle enthusiasts: we invite you to pay homage to one of humanity’s most enduring, perplexing, and delicious phenomena: THE PICKLE.

We’re accepting submissions for THE ART OF THE PICKLE, featuring 2-D and 3-D artwork inspired by pickles, pickling, fermentation, preservation, recipes, food traditions, history, and all the strange and wonderful places the humble pickle can take us.

AND THEN THERE ARE THE PICKLES THEMSELVES.

🏆 BEST PICKLES IN RICHMOND COMPETITION

Bring us your finest homemade, shelf-stable pickles in a sealed jar for a good old-fashioned state-fair-style showdown, juried by the RVA Pickle Party Festival Committee!

🥒 BEST PICKLED CUCUMBER
Dill, sour, sweet, spicy, fermented, funky, bread & butter, or anything in between. If it’s a cucumber and you pickled it, it counts.

🫙 BEST OF EVERYTHING ELSE
Carrots, onions, beans, peppers, beets, watermelon rinds, eggs, fruit, okra, garlic, or whatever wonderfully strange thing you decided to pickle.

Each category receives 1st, 2nd, 3rd + Honorable Mention, plus special awards including Most Creative, Sweetest, Spiciest, Most Unexpected & more!

Pickles will be judged on flavor, texture, cut/presentation, color, and food safety. All entries must be properly labeled, safely canned, and shelf-stable. No quick or refrigerated pickles.

📅 Artwork submissions + pickle competition registration due October 10, 2026.

Pickle jars will be collected during exhibition week.

Attention! This morning we posted an outsourced flier for an upcoming event that unbeknownst to our social media folx was made with Ai (and also pulled images from a local photographer) which is very muc against our NO Ai policy and overall values.
While a large portion of the fliers, posters, and promo we utilize for upcoming visual and performing arts/live music/and other various events we house are not made in house by G5, it is OUR responsibility to continue to make sure nothing slips through the cracks, as this one did.
We felt that our communication was clear to all artists, musicians, promoters, designers, etc that we work with that we have a strict NO Ai policy when it comes to any visual art, fliers/posters, vendors, etc. BUT this is a big lesson for us that we must be much more aggressive in making sure our NO Ai policies and values are being communicated, signed off on by other parties, and upheld.
Sorry y'all and thanks for all the support!
Let's continue to work together to make sure Ai stays out of our galleries, venues, vendor markets, local publications, and other community offerings.
Much love,
Gallery5

TOMORROW: Got questions about labor organizing? We got someone with answers!

Come out to this Activism in Action event -- Dr. Paarlberg is excited to share more about unions, labor organizing tenets and misconceptions, and can even speak to the state of and history of labor organizing in the U.S. Bring your questions!

We also want to take this opportunity to shout out the strike by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Workers United -- "to labor belongs all wealth," friends. Solidarity forever!
