From "Born in the Iron Grip" to what comes next.
This Juneteenth, we honor the enduring impact of Black voices in music and celebrate Joe Jaxson’s appointment as Richmond Symphony's Composer-In-Residence from 2026 to 2029.

Jaxson’s music is noted for its emotional immediacy, narrative depth, and thoughtful engagement with history and identity.

In his first commissioned composition with the Richmond Symphony, "Born in the Iron Grip," Jaxson translated tennis legend Arthur Ashe’s perseverance, discipline, and advocacy into a vivid orchestral work that invited audiences to experience history through sound.

His appointment builds on our desire to continue developing meaningful relationships with composers whose work amplifies Virginia stories and speaks powerfully to the present moment.

A new commissioned work by Jaxson will be featured in the 2026-27 Symphony Series season finale program, Carmina Burana. He will also contribute to education initiatives with Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Programs.

We are sending out a huge thank you to everyone who attended this past weekend’s Richmond SailFest concert and Mile of Music as part of SailFest!

The temperature was high, but our community braved the heat to come together to enjoy the art of live music and celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary.

Providing a variety of free concerts is central to making music accessible to all, and guides our vision: changing lives through the power of music.

We are so grateful to have partnered with Virginia Museum of History for this milestone and historic event!

Richmond Symphony presents the 6th Annual Mile of Music as part of Richmond SailFest! 👟🎶

TOMORROW, June 14th, experience this unique concert presentation featuring ensembles from different sections of the orchestra.

Beginning in Jefferson Park at 12PM, discover mini-concerts along a one-mile route in different City of Richmond parks as you make your way towards the Tall Ships!

At this free event, you can take your time to enjoy some music and movement with family and friends!

Event runs from 12:00pm-2:30pm, starting in Jefferson Park and ending at Intermediate Terminal.

Richmond Symphony and Maymont present: Mile of Music

🕔 Thursday, June 25th, 5:30-7PM

Experience multiple mini-concerts featuring four Richmond Symphony ensembles along a ~1-mile-route within Maymont’s beautiful natural setting on a summer evening.

🌳 At this FREE event, you can take your time to enjoy music and movement with family and friends!

👟 Wear your comfortable walking shoes to stroll between performances and bring a blanket or portable chairs to spread out across Maymont’s spacious landscape to hear acoustic performances featuring the Symphony’s talented musicians in four different ensembles of strings, wind, and brass instruments.

🎻 Ensembles will perform twice over 90-minutes at multiple locations including the Italian Gardens and outside the newly restored and reopened Maymont Mansion.

📍 Start at Maymont’s Hampton Street entrance (1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, Virginia) for the best access to the route. Stay tuned for an exact route map and a schedule of ensemble performances!

The Richmond Symphony will perform this Saturday during a weekend of music and celebration as part of Richmond SailFest, the city’s kickoff to America’s 250th anniversary commemorations ⛵️🇺🇸

This free outdoor concert will feature patriotic favorites and American classics as part of an unforgettable evening of entertainment leading into SailFest’s spectacular fireworks display over the river.

Time: 6:30–8:00pm
Location: Intermediate Terminal Main Stage along the James River

TONIGHT under the stars at Pocahontas State Park! 🌟

Partnerships like ours truly stand the test of time. As this 1998 newspaper feature shows, the Richmond Symphony and Pocahontas State Park have shared a tradition of bringing live orchestral music into the great outdoors for decades.
Tonight we add another chapter at 7:30 PM.

Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, and gather your people!
Free admission, no ticket required ($10 parking) 🎻🌳✨

Bring a blanket, picnic basket and family and friends, and enjoy the sounds of a live orchestra at the beautiful Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield, VA 🌳

The evening will be led by Associate Conductor, Hae Lee.

Program highlights include Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 (movements 1 & 3) by Elaine Zhang (winner of the 2025 concerto competition) and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet.

This concert is FREE and open to the public (no ticket required). A $10 parking fee applies.
